COLD, WINDY SUNDAY; VERY COLD NIGHT AHEAD… Cold, dry air continues to filter into south Alabama and northwest Florida from the northwest behind the strong cold front that moved through last evening. Clouds are hanging tough across the region and temperatures remain in the upper-30s and low-40s as of the Noon hour. Temperatures won’t recover that much today, paving the way for the coldest night so far this winter for the Gulf Coast region. Let’s talk details…
OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE 20s… The brisk northwest wind will continue to bring very cold air off the North American continent our way. Overnight lows for inland areas of south Alabama will be in the mid-20s with coastal areas likely settling in the upper-20s by 6AM. We will be just above the “hard freeze warning” threshold, so I’m not expecting NWS Mobile to trigger a warning at this point. Regardless, it still will be the coldest night of the season so far. Be sure to check pipes, bring in sensitive plants, check on outdoor pets, and check on people that may not have access to adequate heating sources. Those are the classic “4 P’s” of cold weather… People, pets, plants, and pipes. Good way to remember the things we need to do when we have a night below freezing. The “5th P” is “practice fire safety” as space heaters and other small heating devices can be problematic if used improperly.
COLD MONDAY UPCOMING… We will finally get a decent amount of sunshine in the afternoon and evening hours of Sunday as clouds fade away. High temperatures on Monday will have a hard time getting to the 50 degree mark, although I wouldn’t be shocked if a few locales topped 50° in the afternoon hours.
NEXT RAIN CHANCE: LATE TUESDAY… The seemingly never-ending train of areas of low pressure will continue this week. An area of low pressure will move just to our northwest, bringing an accompanying cold front across our region by Wednesday. A few isolated showers will become possible as early as Tuesday evening. Much of the rain will happen on Wednesday, however. For now, severe weather parameters remain very low. Atmospheric instability is expected to again be the limiting factor with this upcoming system. We’ll keep you posted in the RedZone Weather app.
