TROPICS ACTIVE, BUT NOT FOR LOCAL AREA! SLIGHTLY COOLER BY THURSDAY… Tropical Storm Humberto is almost a hurricane on this Sunday evening, but the system is headed AWAY from the continental United States. We’re also watching a tropical wave in the middle of the Atlantic that will probably become a tropical storm in the days ahead. The Gulf of Mexico has an area of low pressure moving west that won’t affect our local area. Locally, we’re dry today with scattered cumulus clouds in the sky. The chance of rain today for any given spot is near zero, although we may have a few coastal showers and storms later this evening. Let’s look at your details…
TROPICAL STORM HUMBERTO TO MOVE NEAR BERMUDA… The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to issue advisories on Tropical Storm Humberto, located north of The Bahamas and east of the Florida coast in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Humberto will NOT affect the United States directly, although we note that Bermuda could have tropical storm- or potentially hurricane-force winds later this week as the system moves by just to their north. Humberto will probably become a hurricane tonight and further strengthening is likely. Again, no local impacts from Humberto.
70% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMATION NEAR THE ANTILLES… There is a tropical wave about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the African continent that has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical storm as it moves northwest over the next 3-5 days. It is at a very low latitude now (9° North) which could potentially hinder development in the next day or two. Beyond that, if the system becomes a tropical storm, most major global models show this system pivoting around an area of high pressure over the central Atlantic Ocean and remaining away from land areas. That is one early forecast thought, highly subject to change. The trends have been GOOD, however. We’ll keep you posted about this system.
10% CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE WESTERN GULF… An area of low pressure moving west in the central Gulf of Mexico will approach the Texas coastline on Tuesday into Wednesday. NHC says this system has a very low (10%) chance of becoming a tropical storm before it moves inland into Texas. If it does develop into a tropical storm, it probably will remain weak and simply be a rainmaker for parts of Texas and perhaps western Louisiana. No local impacts in south Alabama or northwest Florida are expected from this system.
QUIET, HOT WEATHER THROUGH WEDNESDAY… Rain chances will remain very low through Wednesday. High temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-90s with morning lows in the low-70s. Plenty of sunshine is expected each day through the middle part of the week. If you’re headed to a local beach, be sure to check the rip current forecast each day. Even though we’ve got nice weather ahead in the short-term, rip currents have been frequent over the last few days.
SLIGHTLY COOLER OVERNIGHT LOWS STARTING THURSDAY… The number one question I get when I’m out in public these days is, “When will we get some cooler weather?!” The answer is finally in sight, albeit not for long. A cold front is poised to dive to the south later this week. Don’t mistake “cold front” for thinking this will actually be COLD air moving in – it won’t be. We’ll have overnight lows on Thursday morning, Friday morning, and Saturday morning in the mid- to upper-60s. Highs will drop back to around 90° by Friday. Think of this as a teaser for fall as in something to get your hopes up, but nothing of real substance.
NICE, WARM WEEKEND AHEAD… Early forecast trends point to a sunny, nice weekend. High temperatures will be near 90°. Slightly lower humidity values will be in place this weekend after the passage of the cold front on Thursday.
