LAST OF THE MAJOR HEAT TODAY; RAIN CHANCES ON THE INCREASE… Today will likely be the last of the record-setting heat wave that has gripped much of the eastern United States over the last several days. High temperatures on this Saturday will peak in the 94-97° range in most spots across south Alabama and northwest Florida. There could be a few showers and storms around across the region. We’ll call it a 20% chance of storms today, most of which will happen in the afternoon and evening hours. The tornado risk today remains at zero, but just like yesterday, some of the storms may produce gusty winds and very heavy downpours of rain.

SHOWERS POSSIBLE ON SUNDAY… Rain chances will increase slightly (40% chance) for Sunday. Temperatures will ease back to around 90° for an afternoon high.temperatures on Sunday will peak around 92°.

GREATEST CHANCE OF RAIN COMES MONDAY… There is a 70-80% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday as a cold front approaches from the northwest. I expect most locales on Monday to pick up at least some rain, although heavy rain for a long period of time remains unlikely.

SLIGHTLY COOLER AIR EARLY NEXT WEEK… The aforementioned cold front will usher in slightly cooler and slightly drier air into our local area late Monday into Tuesday. High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday of the upcoming week will be in the mid-80s with morning lows in the low- to mid-60s.

SIGNIFICANT COLD FRONT POSSIBLE ONE WEEK FROM TODAY… Model data has become more consistent in advertising the potential for a strong cold front moving through our area in about a week. Early model guidance points to high temperatures in the 70s with lows in the 50s, but let me STRONGLY caution that this data is very preliminary and highly subject to change.

TROPICS ARE QUIET… The National Hurricane Center says no tropical storm formation is expected in the next 2-3 days across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, or Caribbean Sea. The tropics are QUIET. Great news for early October!
