WARM THURSDAY; COOLER TEMPS THIS WEEKEND… High temperatures will peak around the 90 degree mark today, but we’re looking ahead to the weekend when cooler, less humid air will move in from the northwest behind a cold front. That front will spark a few showers and thunderstorms perhaps as early as late Friday evening. Most of the showers and storms will happen on Saturday morning, however, and even then rain chances remain fairly low. Let’s look at your forecast details…

COLLEGE FOOTBALL FORECASTS… Each week, we provide a brief summary of our local college football matchups when the weather isn’t quite active locally. See details below.

ALABAMA AT TEXAS A&M… College Station, Texas will host the matchup on Saturday between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas A&M Aggies. Kickoff happens at 2:30PM with the game being televised on CBS local stations. It’s going to be absolutely beautiful for the game with sunny skies expected. High temperatures around 3PM in College Station will only be near 70°, meaning some fans that are cold-natured may need a light jacket. Temperatures will decline to around 60° by the end of the game.

TROY VS. SOUTH ALABAMA… Troy plays South Alabama on Wednesday, October 16 with a 7PM kickoff on ESPN2. Early indications point to the potential for a few showers and thunderstorms around Troy on Wednesday, although rain chances are in the 30-40% chance range. Temperatures will be in the 70s for the game, most likely.

RAIN CHANCES NOT ZERO, BUT THEY REMAIN LOW FOR NOW… The good news concerning the low rain chances in the days ahead is that I expect many, if not all, of the high school football games across south Alabama and northwest Florida to remain dry Friday evening. We could have a few showers, especially across west Alabama, late Friday evening. A decaying line of showers and thunderstorms will likely pass through our area on Saturday morning. There will be some spots that will have no rain, but some isolated locales could have rainfall totals of 0.75” or more. The severe weather risk with this cold front passage is at or near zero, as of now.

UNFORTUNATELY, SHORT LIVED COOL DOWN… High temperatures on Saturday will be in the 70s and near 80° near the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches. I expect Sunday morning to be the coolest morning out of the next 7 days with overnight lows in the 50s and low-60s across our area. We quickly rebound into the low- to mid-80s on Sunday ahead of temperatures Monday into Tuesday that will probably be slightly above our climatological norms for this time of year.

MORE RAIN POSSIBLE NEXT WEEK… Forecast confidence as we go into next week is unusually low, with multiple model solutions pointing to different solutions. For now, I think it’s prudent to suggest at least some chance of rain late in the day on Monday into Tuesday. It is too early to know whether severe weather will be a concern, but early indications do NOT point to a tornado risk. We will keep watching and bring you the latest in future forecast updates in the days ahead.
