SHOWERS CONTINUE TO WEAKEN… If you blinked, you may have missed the weakening line of showers that continues to move eastward across south Alabama and northwest Florida. This narrow band of showers extends from Highland Home to McKenzie to East Brewton to Myrtle Grove.

Showers will continue to weaken and move eastward. Cool, dry air is filtering in behind the advancing cold front that is right behind this line of showers. We dry out in the next 6 hours and Monday should be completely dry with no rain issues.

STORMS ENTERING S.W. ALABAMA… The narrow band of showers and thunderstorms we’ve been monitoring over southeast Mississippi is now moving into far western parts of southwest Alabama in Clarke and Washington counties. Heavy rain will happen imminently near Millry, Chatom, Jordan, Yarbo, Campbell, Marvin, Woods Bluff, and Coffeeville.

Storms remain below severe limits. I’ll keep monitoring radar trends in the hours ahead and post updates here as needed.

NARROW BAND OF STORMS TO MOVE THROUGH OVERNIGHT… Showers and storms have been plentiful today to our north across the northern halves of Alabama and Mississippi. Much of our local area remains quiet this evening. The narrow band of thunderstorms currently near the I-59 corridor, Hattiesburg, and Meridian will cross our area from west to east over the next 6 hours. Showers and thunderstorms will exit the area to the east by 3AM Monday. The overall severe weather risk locally across south Alabama and northwest Florida is VERY low at this point. Storms across the Deep South will continue to slowly weaken over the next few hours as the better dynamics of this weather system lift away to the north.

WHAT TO EXPECT OVERNIGHT… Short version: Maybe some rain and probably not much else. Could there be some thunder involved? Yes, however strong storms at this point seem like a stretch. The risk is not entirely zero across inland counties, but it is quite low. If we had a tornado warning tonight, I would be surprised. I always get a little concerned mentioning that, however, as I always tell everyone to have a way to receive urgent weather warnings JUST IN CASE we happen to have a rogue warning or two. Again, that’s not really expected at this point, but it’s not out of the realm of possibilities. I’ll have updates as needed in the RedZone Weather app.

MUCH COOLER TOMORROW… Temperatures will be in the upper-40s by 6AM on Monday as a cold front moves though. High temperatures on Monday will struggle to get to 60 degrees!

My next forecast video will be posted by 7:15AM on Monday. Have a nice evening!

SHOWERS STREAMING INLAND… Small showers are streaming northward across parts of Monroe, Conecuh, Escambia (AL), and Escambia (FL) counties early this evening. These areas of rain are pretty docile and not remotely close to being severe.

Showers are also happening near Destin, Miramar Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach in the southern parts of Okaloosa and Walton counties in northwest Florida.

TORNADO WATCH TO THE NORTH… Much of northwest Alabama and northern Mississippi remains involved in a tornado watch until 9PM. Storms are causing severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings to be issued across parts of north-central Mississippi northeast of Jackson (MS) as of 3:43PM. If you’re traveling to those areas, please be aware of the slightly higher tornado risk this evening.

WHAT TO EXPECT LOCALLY… Rain and occasional thunderstorms will increase in coverage over the next few hours across south Alabama and northwest Florida. The line of potentially stronger storms will move through late tonight. The overall severe weather risk locally remains very low.

I’ll keep watching radar trends and bring you updates here in the RZW app as needed.

STORMS THIS EVENING INTO EARLY MONDAY; LEVEL 2 RISK TO OUR NORTH… Showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage across south Alabama and northwest Florida over the next 8-10 hours. The Storm Prediction Center has introduced a Level 2 (out of 5) standard slight risk of severe storms for parts of northwest Alabama, northern Mississippi, and southern Tennessee. Much of central Alabama is included in the lower-end, Level 1 risk area where isolated stronger storms may happen. The overall tornado risk for our local area in south Alabama and northwest Florida is now much lower, but it’s not quite zero across inland areas. I expect showers and storms to move through tonight. Some of the storms across inland counties may be strong at times. The risk of damaging winds and a brief, spin-up tornado is very low across our local area. I’ll be watching radar trends and posting updates in the RedZone Weather app as needed. Much cooler air arrives on Monday ahead of a dry, cool New Year’s Eve. Rain returns on Thursday. Let’s look at all of your forecast details.

LEVEL 2 (OUT OF 5) RISK OF STRONG STORMS IN NORTHWEST ALABAMA… The Storm Prediction Center introduced a Level 2 (out of 5) slight risk of strong to severe storms for northwest Alabama, north and central Mississippi, extreme northeastern Louisiana, and southern Tennessee. These are the areas that have the highest chance today of having a tornado or damaging wind gusts. This includes Huntsville, Decatur, Athens, Ardmore, Cullman, Jasper, Vernon, Hamilton, Double Springs, Russellville, Moulton, Muscle Shoals, Florence, and surrounding communities in northwest Alabama.

LOW-END RISK FOR CENTRAL ALABAMA… The Level 1 risk that was in place for our local area has been trimmed back and now includes much of northeast and central Alabama. These are the areas where the atmosphere is a bit more stable and not as conducive for a strong or severe storm later today. This includes areas like Birmingham, Montgomery, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, Anniston, Selma, Demopolis, Clanton, Prattville, Alexander City, Boaz, Oneonta, Fort Payne, Butler, Camden, and surrounding areas.

LOCAL RISK IS NOW LOWER… Nearly all of us in south Alabama and northwest Florida are now in the “General Thunderstorms” zone, aka out of any formal severe weather risk for today into tonight. This is good news! This means that storms could have quite a bit of lightning (potentially) and torrential downpours of rain, but the risk of a tornado and damaging winds is now much lower.

RAIN & STORMS OVERNIGHT; MUCH COOLER MONDAY… Rain chances will be at their peak locally tonight around 10PM. Rain clears out between 2AM and 5AM on Monday. Skies will clear from west to east during the day on Monday. Much cooler air will flow into our region behind the cold front. High temperatures on Monday will be in the low-60s.

SUNNY & COOL ON NEW YEAR’S EVE… Mostly sunny skies are expected for New Year’s Eve on Tuesday. High temperatures will be around the 60 degree mark. No rain is expected on Tuesday into Tuesday night.

NEW YEAR’S EVE FIREWORKS FORECAST… We’re kicking off the year 2020 with very seasonal temperatures. I expect most spots across the region to be in the 40s at the stroke of midnight on Tuesday night. No rain issues are expected, thus we have a nice, cool scene on tap for the fireworks across the region for New Year’s!

NICE NEW YEAR’S DAY WEDNESDAY… Mostly sunny skies will greet us for the first morning of 2020. Cloud coverage will increase throughout the day on Wednesday and there could be a few showers perhaps as early as 8PM Wednesday night. Vast majority of the rain will hold off until Thursday and Friday, however.

RAIN RETURNS THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY… This will probably be a good, soaking rain across our area setting up for Thursday and Friday as an area of low pressure moves by. Early indications point to 2 to 4 inches of rain in total across the region. This means we will start the year 2020 with a likely rain surplus! That’s good news as 2019 is running a notable 5-10” rainfall total deficit compared to our climatological norms. The severe weather parameters for the rain event Thursday into Friday, for now, seem low. I’ll keep watching trends and bring you the latest over the next few days.

ISOLATED STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE SUNDAY EVENING… Isolated strong to marginally severe storms could happen Sunday evening into early Monday as a cold front crosses south Alabama and northwest Florida. The main concern on Sunday evening will be the potential for a few brief, spin-up tornadoes and damaging wind gusts in the stronger storms. Storms will cross the area from 1PM Sunday to 1AM Monday. This is not a situation that warrants major stress, but it is something we all need to have in the back of our minds as we go through Sunday.

My next forecast video will be posted by 2PM on Sunday afternoon unless severe weather coverage happens to be warranted before that. Have a nice Saturday evening!
