TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT CLOSE TO HOME? A LOW-END CHANCE… The National Hurricane Center has outlined an area of concern in the northern Gulf of Mexico just south of our local coastline that now has a 10-20% chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next few days. There is a surface trough that has been nearly stationary over the last 24-48 hours to our south. An area of low pressure may develop and move east along the trough with a chance of tropical storm formation in the northeastern Gulf or perhaps in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean early next week. Regardless of if a tropical storm develops, local impacts for our area in south Alabama and northwest Florida will be negligible other than heavy rain at times today into Monday. The rain that happens locally will be from pulse-type thunderstorms that rapidly develop and gradually fade away.

POP-UP STORMS EXPECTED ACROSS OUR AREA TODAY… Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Sunday. Thunderstorms will be most numerous this afternoon into this evening, although I wouldn’t be shocked if a few areas have storms around as soon as later this morning. Heavy rain, gusty winds, lots of lightning, and even small hail in the strongest of storms will be possible. The overall risk of severe weather is low, but a few of the thunderstorms today could briefly ramp up to severe levels with gusty winds being the main concern. High temperatures will peak around the 90 degree mark today.

NEXT VIDEO LATER TODAY… I’ll have your next regularly scheduled RedZone Weather forecast video posted later this evening as we discuss the latest information concerning the tropics and take a look at what you can expect in detail for the upcoming week.
