HEAT INDEX VALUES SOARING AGAIN TODAY; FEW STORMS THIS EVENING… It is hot and humid across our region. There’s simply no way to sugarcoat it in that today will be quite oppressive with a thick, humid, hot air mass in place across our region. Heat index values will soar to above 100 degrees later this morning and could end up closer to 110° by 3PM in most spots. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to pop up this afternoon into this evening. Unlike what happened on Sunday with the widespread severe storms and shelf clouds, today will feature the pulse variety, aka pop up, storms that bubble up very quickly and don’t move that much. Today’s pattern is set to repeat over the next few days. Let’s look at a few forecast details…

ISOLATED STORMS WILL LIKELY POP UP THIS AFTERNOON… We had one severe thunderstorm warning last evening for parts of southern Mobile County. The warning was in effect for all of 15 minutes or so before being cancelled. Today will likely feature several pop-up storms with some of the storms potentially being on the strong side. Gusty winds, heavy rain, and cloud-to-ground lightning will be the main concerns. Widespread severe weather is NOT expected today.

MORE POP-UP STORMS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS… If you’re looking for a forecast change, we just don’t see any sign of that anytime soon, which is what should be expected for mid-July. We usually settle into a very consistent, sultry pattern in mid-July and hang out in the same airmass for several weeks. High temperatures will be in the mid-90s each day with excessively high heat index values. Morning lows will be in the mid-70s.

NO TROPICAL STORMS EXPECTED TO FORM THIS WEEK… The National Hurricane Center indicates in their tropical weather discussion that no tropical storms are expected to form over the next 5 days in the north Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico. Keep in mind that July is typically not super active compared to August, September, and October in the Atlantic Hurricane Season each year. Activity will probably ramp up over the next few weeks as we get closer to the climatological peak of hurricane season on September 11.
