P.M. POP-UP STORMS TODAY; MORE OF THE SAME FOR THE NEXT WEEK… Summertime is here to stay for awhile with nothing but pop-up thunderstorms in the forecast over the next week. Storms today will be most numerous in the afternoon and evening hours. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but as is so often the case in the summer months around here, some of the stronger storms could “pack a punch” with heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, and gusty winds. High temperatures across the region will be in the mid- to upper-80s.

CLAUDETTE NOW EXTRATROPICAL… The National Hurricane Center has issued the final advisory on what was Tropical Storm Claudette. The remnants of Claudette are now extratropical and moving northeast across the northern Atlantic Ocean. This will be the final mention of Claudette in our morning forecast discusssion.

TROPICAL WAVE APPROACHING LESSER ANTILLES… Outside of the decaying system that was Claudette, the only other hotspot in the tropics right now is a tropical wave currently approaching the Lesser Antilles and the Caribbean Sea. The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 30% chance of becoming a named tropical storm over the next 48 hours as the system moves east into the Caribbean Sea. Upper-level winds will likely become unfavorable for development this weekend, thus even if a tropical storm develops, it likely will not be an issue for our local area.
