POP-UP STORMS LIKELY TODAY; TROPICAL WAVE IN ATLANTIC… Scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Monday. Storms will likely become numerous as we go into the evening hours. While severe weather issues are not expected, some of the storms may be “loud and proud” at times. Dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning will be a concern along with torrential downpours of rain. Our weather pattern is poised to remain the same in the days ahead as our seasonal early August weather pattern continues. High temperatures will be near 90 this afternoon.

LIGHTNING STRIKE TO STUDIO LOCATION… Normally in our RedZone Weather forecast videos, I stand in front of a green chroma key wall to bring you the forecast everyday. Unfortunately, our studio location in Brewton, Alabama suffered considerable damage due to a lightning strike that initially struck a large tree in our yard. That is why our daily forecast video looks a bit different this morning with me in a “box” as opposed to being in front of the green wall. Replacement units and parts are en route and will arrive over the next several days. I expect to be able to produce a normal video hopefully no later than Friday morning at the latest. While it is unfortunate our studio has lightning damage, I am thankful for multiple redundancy and backup systems that allow us to continue to provide weather information. Thanks for watching our coverage!

SCATTERED STORMS LIKELY OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible over the next several days. Most of the showers and thunderstorms will happen in the afternoon and evening hours across south Alabama and northwest Florida. These storms will produce cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, heavy rain, and gusty winds in some cases. If you can hear thunder (even if it is distant), you are close enough to a storm to be struck by lightning. “When thunder roars, please go indoors.”

40-50% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMING IN CENTRAL ATLANTIC OCEAN… A tropical wave emerged from the African continent over the weekend. This tropical wave is moving westward at 15-20 mph. The National Hurricane Center suggests this tropical disturbance has a 40-50% chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next 5 days as a general westward or west-northwestward movement continues. This system is far away from land and will remain away from land over the next 7 days. There is a very high probability this system develops briefly into a tropical storm before fading away next weekend. I will have further updates in the days ahead as we track what could become Tropical Storm Danielle. No threat to the local area.
