THUNDERSTORMS LIKELY TODAY AND ON FRIDAY… Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible today and again on Friday. Rain could be heavy at times today in some of the stronger storms. There is a chance some of the storms may briefly produce gusty winds capable of knocking down a tree or two across the region. High temperatures will be in the upper-80s today. More scattered storms are likely on Friday and again on Saturday. Keep in mind that some communities today and in the days ahead will receive no rain at all. That is the way it works around here in the summer months. Some communities get two inches of rainfall while other communities just down the road from you may not get any rain at all.

30% CHANCE OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT IN BAY OF CAMPECHE… An area of disturbed weather bringing heavy rain to parts of Central America continues to move northwest. This tropical disturbance is situated near the southern part of the Yucatan Peninsula near Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. The disturbance will continue to move northwest and emerge over the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico tonight or tomorrow. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a 30-40% chance of this system briefly becoming a tropical storm before moving inland across parts of north Mexico or south Texas in a few days. Local impacts in south Alabama or northwest Florida appear highly unlikely at this time.

REMAINDER OF TROPICAL ATLANTIC IS QUIET… For now, the remainder of the Atlantic Basin (outside of the aforementioned tropical disturbance) is quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop over the next 5 days. Some of the longer range models have indicated the potential for an uptick in tropical activity in 7-10 days across parts of the basin, but it is too early for any specifics. I’ll keep you posted if anything legitimate develops. Note that the fear mongers and “tropical trolls” (people that love making “hype posts” and clickbait to garner clicks and likes) will have a field day with the ramp up in tropical activity. Pay them no attention. Stick to me, stick to local, reputable meteorologists, stick to the National Weather Service. Pay no attention to the fear mongers. They scare people and increase anxiety, which isn’t helpful for anyone.
