DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS TO CONTINUE; HIGH TEMPS BELOW FREEZING IN SOME LOCALES… Please do not drive this morning if you are in an area that has snow/ice on the ground. The fact that one of the major roadways in our area, Interstate 10, is totally shut down in northwest Florida should highlight just how dangerous road conditions continue to be across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Unfortunately, road conditions probably will not improve much today. The high snow totals (up to a foot of snow in some spots!) are going to act as a hinderance for temperatures to rise above the freezing mark in some locations across the region. If temperatures remain below freezing, little to no melting will happen, thus these road problems will continue all day into the night and into Thursday morning. Please do not drive unless it is a dire emergency.
HIGH TEMPERATURES NEAR FREEZING MARK TODAY… Places further to the north in our area like Thomasville and Beatrice that did not get as much snow yesterday will likely be in the mid 30s (and above freezing) this afternoon. I am concerned that places further to the south that picked up between 6-12″ of snow may not get above the freezing mark at all today. There is a real chance some communities won’t get out of the 20s today. Odds are increasing that road conditions may not improve much at all today.
ANOTHER VERY COLD NIGHT AHEAD… Overnight lows will be in the 10s again tonight with wind chill values in the single digits again. An Extreme Cold Warning will likely be needed for the entire local area. We encourage everyone to continue the “cold protocol” we have been advertising over the last several days. Keep those faucets dripping and ensure that outdoor pets are inside tonight.
GRADUAL WARMING TREND OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS… High temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s today, 40s on Thursday and Friday, 50s on Saturday, and 60s on Sunday. There will be many people craving some warmer weather after the snow event and after the multiple rounds of very cold temperatures we have had. Milder weather is coming this weekend!
We currently have no snow, mixed precipitation, or severe weather in the forecast over the next 7 days. Extremely cold temperatures and icy roads are the concerns through at least tomorrow.
