SCATTERED SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE TUESDAY NIGHT; QUITE WINDY FOR FAT TUESDAY… Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and damaging wind gusts will be possible on Tuesday night across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Nearly all of us across the region are included in the Level 2 (out of 5) severe weather risk valid for Tuesday into Tuesday night, meaning scattered severe thunderstorms will be possible. Not everyone will have severe storms, but some communities might. This Tuesday will be the pinnacle of Mardi Gras season with Fat Tuesday festivities in many communities across the region. I am concerned, particularly in Mobile and Baldwin counties, that some of the parades may be impacted by severe storms in the evening hours of Tuesday. In addition to the severe weather potential, wind gusts on Tuesday (well in advance of any storms) will be notable with 20-30 mph wind gusts being possible region wide.
SEVERE WEATHER TIMING – TUESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY… 6PM on Tuesday to 3AM Wednesday is the nine hour window for strong to severe thunderstorms across southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. Storms will start on the western side of our region in Mobile and Washington counties and gradually move eastward throughout the night, exiting out of Covington and Okaloosa counties to the east by 3AM. We encourage everyone to have multiple ways to hear warnings Tuesday night – you need something that can wake you up like a loud NOAA Weather Radio, just in case your specific location goes under a tornado warning.
MAIN THREATS LOCALLY: DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND A FEW TORNADOES… Damaging wind gusts capable of knocking down trees will be the main concern on Tuesday night. A few tornadoes will also be possible. For now, this does not look like an event featuring long track, significant tornadoes across our local area, but like I always caution, even if a “weak” tornado affects you, it’s a big deal. Please be able to hear warnings Tuesday night!
FEW SHOWERS POSSIBLE TOMORROW MORNING… I am not expecting significant weather hazards tomorrow (Monday, March 3, 2025). We may have some light rain around early tomorrow morning with the potential for dense fog in some communities. High temperatures tomorrow will be near the 70 degree mark.
