DAMAGING WIND GUSTS & HAIL POSSIBLE IN THE STORMS ON WEDNESDAY; STORMS TO MOVE FROM EAST TO WEST… Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible across much of south Alabama and northwest Florida tomorrow (Wednesday, June 25) with the main concerns being damaging wind gusts and large hail. We’ll be watching pop-up storms in the afternoon and evening hours that will be moving “backwards” compared to our typical storm motion. Thunderstorms will be moving FROM east TO west due to our area being at the southern periphery of an area of high pressure.
TORNADO RISK REMAINS QUITE LOW… Could a tornado happen on Wednesday or Thursday? Yes, but it is extremely unlikely. Thunderstorms are more likely to produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter size hail. We probably will see pop-up thunderstorms that ultimately become a larger cluster of storms in the evening hours pushing to the east. Storms will be developing in an environment with PROLIFIC instability. Shear values won’t be particularly robust but there will be extreme amounts of convective available potential energy (CAPE/instability) due to the high temperatures in place. High temperatures on Wednesday will be in the mid to upper 90s. The lightning risk near storms tomorrow will be HIGH.
NOT EVERYONE WILL HAVE STORMS TOMORROW… Thunderstorms will be scattered in nature on Wednesday, meaning not every community will have rain and storms before the end of the day. Some spots may be completely dry all day and all night. Some other communities, however, will have storms around. Some of those storms could become severe.
