MULTIPLE ROUNDS OF STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE OVER NEXT 7-10 DAYS… We’re staring down an active next 7-10 days with at least three rounds of rain and storms ahead. The first will arrive late on Monday as an area of low pressure moves by well to our north with a trailing cold front that moves across the Deep South. The Storm Prediction Center has introduced a low-end, marginal severe weather risk for Tuesday. The next, potentially more potent, system moves in late Thursday into Friday when we could have a few strong to severe storms. Before all of that, a nice, mostly cloudy Sunday afternoon and evening is on tap for south Alabama and northwest Florida. High temperatures will peak in the mid-60s this afternoon as cloud coverage increases. Let’s talk details about the upcoming week…
EVENING RAIN LIKELY ON MONDAY… Rain coverage will increase from west to east during the afternoon and evening hours of Monday. Showers will likely be most numerous across west Alabama at first. High temperatures on Monday will surge into the 70s. Little to no atmospheric instability will be present on Monday locally, however we do note that the Storm Prediction Center has introduced a Level 1 marginal severe weather risk to our northwest for parts of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Our chance of thunderstorms will happen on Tuesday.
LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK ON TUESDAY… The Storm Prediction Center has included much of Alabama and northwest Florida in their Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk zone valid for Tuesday, February 12. Isolated severe storms capable of producing damaging straight line winds will be the main concern. The tornado risk will be low, but it won’t be zero. We’ll need to watch the storms that are moving by Tuesday morning closely. The storms are expected to move through south Alabama and northwest Florida in the morning hours, mainly between 5AM and Noon. Rain will exit to the east Tuesday afternoon.
DRIER WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY… Cooler, drier, stable air will filter into Alabama and northwest Florida on Wednesday as high temperatures drop back into the mid-60s. Plenty of sunshine is expected on Wednesday before clouds increase yet again on Thursday.
ANOTHER ROUND OF STORMS ON FRIDAY… There is a chance that “this weathermaker” will be stronger and more potent than the first batch of storms earlier in the week. The surface area of low pressure will likely track to our northwest near St. Louis featuring a trailing cold front and a warm front that will lift north across our area. This will allow warm, unstable air to move northward from the Gulf, potentially setting the stage for a severe weather event. It’s too early to give specifics, but the idea is certainly on the table for a few strong storms Friday during the daytime hours.
