MORE RAIN THIS WEEKEND; ICE/MIX POSSIBLE TO OUR NORTHWEST MONDAY… This is probably the last thing most folks want to hear but we have more rounds of rain expected at times this weekend into early next week. Rain chances will remain elevated at times through at least Monday evening. We also will be closely watching trends this weekend as there is a chance parts of the Deep South (to our northwest) could have ice accumulation issues on Monday into Tuesday of the upcoming week.

RAIN AT TIMES TODAY INTO TONIGHT… Rain and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder will be possible today into the evening hours. Rain coverage will gradually increase through this evening before decreasing on Saturday morning. Rain could be heavy at times, but for now, the risk of widespread severe weather remains near zero.

COOL TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND… High temperatures likely won’t get out of the 50s in many spots across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Friday. There is a chance some spots in Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton counties could briefly have slightly higher temperatures (perhaps in the low-60s) this afternoon due to the placement of the now stalled cold front in place near our region. Overnight lows will be around 50 by daybreak on Saturday. Lows will drop into the 40s by Sunday morning.

MORE RAIN SATURDAY, SUNDAY, AND MONDAY… Again, forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but more rain will be possible Saturday, Sunday, and on Monday. There is a good chance the daytime hours on Monday may be drier ahead of another round of rain on Monday evening.

DRIER & COOLER TUESDAY… I am cautiously optimistic that Tuesday could be the driest day out of the next 7 days. Rain and precipitation will be well to our east at that point and we will have much cooler, drier air in place across the local area.

EVEN MORE RAIN FOR MIDWEEK… Unfortunately, it looks like the break from the rain on Tuesday will be fairly short-lived as we have another potential for rain in the area in the middle part of the upcoming week as an area of low pressure passes near or directly over our local area. This could be another big snow or ice accumulation event for areas to our northwest, although it remains too early to know specifics. For our local area, this event looks like rain with very little severe weather risk and no wintry precipitation.

Several larger areas of rain are happening across southeast Mississippi that will likely ultimately move into our region. You may hear some thunder at times overnight, but severe weather remains highly unlikely.

ICE & FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLE TO OUR NORTHWEST EARLY NEXT WEEK… Rain is in the forecast locally early next week, but areas not too far from us in parts of Mississippi, Louisiana, and northwest Alabama could be dealing with significant ice accumulation issues. Model data continues to firm up on the idea that the bitterly cold, Arctic air expected to move into much of the eastern half of the continental United States will likely remain to our west and northwest. That means that for the local area, RAIN remains the story. This remains a lower confidence forecast, thus changes may be needed in the days ahead.

GREATEST ALABAMA IMPACTS IN NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE STATE… Ice accumulations could become a real problem in parts of northwest Alabama early next week. The greatest chance, at this point, of icy roads and the potential for power outages appears to be along and northwest of Interstate 59, generally. This includes places like Muscle Shoals, Florence, Huntsville, Cullman, Jasper, Fayette, Gordo, Aliceville, Moulton, Hamilton, Russellville, Decatur, and surrounding areas. The greatest issues are expected to be Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

LONG WAY TO GO IN WINTER… If you’re a snow or winter weather fan, don’t fret just yet. We still have over a month left in winter. Based on the ongoing weather pattern with multiple rain chances each week, there certainly could be other opportunities in the weeks ahead for snow across the local area. Even Monday is not a sure bet at this point to not have snow, but the odds have certainly decreased.

RAIN LIKELY AT TIMES OVERNIGHT AND INTO FRIDAY… Before we get to next week, we have multiple chances of rain ahead. Most of the heavier rain that happened in many locales earlier has shifted to our east across parts of southeast Alabama and the Florida Panhandle region. Scattered showers continue across our local area. These showers will continue overnight into Friday. Another wave of rain will likely move across our area Friday afternoon and evening. Severe weather remains highly unlikely.
