SHOWERS & STORMS AT TIMES TODAY; COLD FRONT TO MOVE BY… Rain and thunderstorms are set to happen at times today, mainly in the form of a line of storms set to move across our region over the next few hours. The Storm Prediction Center has included inland areas in their Level 1 (out of 5) low-end severe weather risk zone where an isolated stronger storm or two will be possible. The low-end risk zone is driven exclusively by the potential for storms that may ramp up and produce gusty winds. The overall tornado risk today remains quite low. High temperatures on this Sunday will peak in the low-80s but cooler temperatures are on the way. A cold front will move through the region behind the line of storms, allowing cooler, drier air to rush in tonight. A few more Sunday morning forecast details are below.
LEVEL 1 (OUT OF 5) SEVERE WEATHER RISK… Much of Alabama and a small sliver of northwest Florida are involved in the low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk today. All risks are not created equally, in the sense that sometimes you get a risk for tornadoes, sometimes for hail, and sometimes for the potential for damaging winds. The low-end risk locally has been outlined because of a potential for gusty winds in the stronger storms that happen today. While an isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out, the overall tornado risk today is QUITE low. Any tornadoes that happen today are far more likely to happen well to our northeast across parts of Virginia, the Carolinas, and perhaps northern Georgia.
RAIN CLEARS OUT THIS EVENING… Rain and thunderstorms should be long gone to our east by 7-8PM this evening. That is when cooler, drier air will be rushing into our region from the northwest. This will allow for overnight lows to be near 50 degrees by Monday morning. High temperatures on Monday are expected to be in the low- to mid-70s with plenty of sunshine in the morning hours.
RAIN & STORMS AHEAD FOR TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY… More rain is ahead, this time on Tuesday and on Wednesday. Right now, Wednesday looks to be the more “active weather day,” with a chance of rain and thunderstorms. Strong storms, including the potential for gusty winds, will be possible Wednesday. We will be able to get much more specific on the potential hazards in the Wednesday storms over the next few days.
MUCH COOLER FOR THE END OF THE WEEK… One of the reasons we have a chance of rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday is because a cold front will be moving into our region from the northwest. This cold front will knock down temperatures into the 60s for afternoon highs on Thursday! Overnight lows will dip briefly into the upper-30s on Friday morning for inland communities. Full sunshine is expected on both Thursday and Friday.
