HOT WEEKEND WITH A FEW P.M. STORMS; WATCHING TROPICAL WAVES IN ATLANTIC… Temperatures will increase to the mid-90s by Sunday as our seasonal, summer weather pattern is set to continue. High temperatures on this Friday will be in the low-90s across the region. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely develop this afternoon into this evening. I expect more showers and storms to fire up on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, respectively, as well. Two tropical waves are being monitored in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, one approaching the Lesser Antilles and one near and just south of the Cabo Verde Islands. Fortunately, we do not have any imminent tropical concerns this weekend in the Gulf. A few more Friday morning forecast details are below.

SCATTERED STORMS REMAIN THE NORM… This weekend, showers and thunderstorms will likely pop up each day in the afternoon and evening hours. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but some of the thunderstorms may produce quite a bit of cloud-to-ground lightning and loud thunder. High temperatures Saturday will be in the low- to mid-90s with temperatures closer to the 94-95° range by Sunday afternoon.

70-80% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM DEVELOPING IN ATLANTIC… A tropical wave has emerged into the far eastern Atlantic Ocean from the western coast of Africa. This system now has a 70 to 80 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next few days as it moves west or west-northwest. It remains way too early to know if this system poses any type of real threat to the USA. From NHC: “A large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over western Africa and the far eastern tropical Atlantic is associated with a tropical wave. Environmental conditions appear somewhat conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend or early next week while the system moves generally west-northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic.”

20% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMING NEAR LESSER ANTILLES… In addition to the previously mentioned tropical wave, another, separate tropical wave is located in the central Atlantic Ocean. This tropical wave has a 20% chance of becoming a tropical storm as the system moves northwest over the next few days. We note that upper-level winds are likely to be unfavorable for rapid development through the weekend.
