FRED MOVING AWAY; GRACE LIKELY TO MOVE WEST; P.M. STORMS LOCALLY… Now that Fred is moving away, our local area can breathe a sigh of relief for now as it looks like Grace will remain well to the south of our local area. Locally, we will have a few showers and thunderstorms around this afternoon into this evening. High temperatures will be in the upper-80s today. More pop-up thunderstorms are ahead in each of the next 7 days with increasing temperatures by the weekend. Some spots by Sunday could easily be in the mid- to upper-90s for afternoon highs. A few more Tuesday morning forecast notes are below.

FRED NOW INLAND NEAR AL/GA LINE… Fred is now a tropical depression located inland near the Alabama and Georgia border. The remnants of Fred will potentially produce a few tornadoes today across parts of Georgia, the western part of the Carolinas, and southwest Virginia. Gusty winds and heavy rain are also likely in those areas as Fred continues to move northeast. The remnants of Fred will continue to gradually weaken over the next day or so until the system completely dissipates over the Northeast U.S.

GRACE MOVING WEST THROUGH THE CARIBBEAN… Confidence has been increasing that Grace, currently a tropical depression located in the Caribbean Sea approaching Jamaica, will remain to our south in the coming days. The National Hurricane Center forecast calls for Grace to move west toward the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico before crossing into the southern Gulf. Grace could be a problem for Texas or northern Mexico in a few days. Interests in Texas, particularly south Texas, should closely monitor the progress of Grace. While this is not an all clear just yet for our local area, odds are very high that Grace will miss our area well to the south.

TROPICAL STORM HENRI NEAR BERMUDA… Tropical Depression 8 strengthened yesterday to tropical storm status and is now known as Tropical Storm Henri (pronounced Ayn-Ree). Henri is expected to move southwest and loop around Bermuda before moving north in a few days and ultimately turn northeast and move out to sea, per the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center. Henri will likely never be a direct concern for Alabama or northwest Florida.

NO OTHER IMMINENT TROPICAL CONCERNS… Outside of our three active tropical storms mentioned above, there are no other areas of concern where tropical development is imminently expected to happen in the Atlantic Basin. The peak of hurricane season is September 11 and the season ends November 30. A long way to go!
