HEAVY RAIN & STORMS LIKELY TODAY; FLASH FLOODING CONCERNS INTO TOMORROW… Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected on this Monday as prolific moisture continues to stream into our local area from the Gulf. Rain chances will be elevated throughout the day, and while a few breaks in the rain are likely, don’t put that umbrella too far away. More rain is likely at times tonight and into Tuesday. The risk of flash flooding will become a concern across the region where storms train over the same areas. Fortunately, widespread severe weather remains unlikely today. A stronger storm or two cannot completely be ruled out, but the overall risk of a tornado today remains very low. Drier conditions are set to return to our region by Friday and into the weekend. We’re now watching a new area of concern in the tropics in addition to Hurricane Sam and Tropical Depression Victor. I’ve got all of your Monday morning forecast details below.

FLASH FLOODING THREAT TO BE MAXIMIZED TOMORROW… Nuisance-type flooding may become possible at times today, but the bigger risk of organized flash flooding will happen tomorrow as heavy rain yet again becomes possible. The greater risk of flash flooding in our local area will happen along, south, and east of Interstate 65 in parts of Escambia (AL), Covington, Butler, Escambia (FL), Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton counties. If you encounter a water-covered roadway, please “turn around, don’t drown.”

ELEVATED RAIN CHANCES WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible across the region on Wednesday and Thursday. Rain chances will not be AS high as today and Tuesday, however, and I expect showers and storms to be more widely spaced in nature. High temperatures will be in the mid-80s with morning lows in the mid-60s.

FEW STORMS FRIDAY; DRIER CONDITIONS THIS WEEKEND… Lower rain chances are ahead for Friday ahead of a drier weekend. Most of the Friday night football games should be dry. Sunshine returns this weekend with little to no chance of rain. Highs will be in the low- to mid-80s this weekend with morning lows in the low- to mid-60s.

TROPICS: LOW PRESSURE NEAR THE BAHAMAS… An area of disturbed weather located near the Turks & Caicos Islands near The Bahamas is moving northwest. This low pressure area has a low (<30%) chance of becoming a tropical storm as the system continues moving northwest toward the Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina coastal areas. From NHC: "A large area of disorganized cloudiness and showers over the southeastern Bahamas and adjacent southwestern Atlantic waters is associated with a surface trough. Upper-level winds are expected to be only marginally conducive, and any development of this system should be slow to occur while it moves west-northwestward at around 10 mph through Monday, followed by a slow northwestward motion through the end of the week."

TROPICS: HURRICANE SAM BECOMING POST-TROPICAL TODAY… Hurricane Sam is rapidly moving northeast across the northern Atlantic Ocean. Sam is centered about 600 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada. Sam is expected to lose its tropical characteristics today and become a post-tropical area of low pressure tonight. No significant land impacts are expected due to Sam at this point.

TROPICS: T.D. VICTOR CONTINUES TO WEAKEN… Tropical Depression Victor continues to be a weak, disorganized system located about halfway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles in the open waters of the central Atlantic Ocean. Victor is expected to become a remnant area of low pressure today as the system continues moving northwest. No land impacts are expected due to Victor.
