EXTREMELY HOT TODAY; TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT TO CONTINUE INTO WEEKEND… Temperatures will make a run at the 103-105° this afternoon in what will likely be one of the hottest, if not THE hottest day, of 2023. Those numbers reflect the air temperatures expected this afternoon. Factoring in humidity, the heat index values (or what the air feels like) will be close to 110° in many spots across the region. This is extreme, scorching heat for our local area, well in excess of our “normal summer heat.” The one bit of good news today is that the high-res models have hinted that a few showers and thunderstorms may form in the heat of the day. Keep in mind that MOST communities will remain dry today, but a few downpours may happen, specifically in the evening hours.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: HOT CONDITIONS TO CONTINUE… Triple digit high temperatures will continue on Friday and into the upcoming weekend. High temperatures will be in the 98-103° range each day with morning lows in the upper-70s. Rain chances will remain low, but not zero, each day this weekend. Early indications point to relief from the current extreme heat early next week when high temperatures return to more seasonal values in the 90s.

TROPICS: HAROLD DISSIPATES… Tropical Storm Harold made landfall along Padre Island, Texas yesterday in the late morning hours. Harold provided beneficial rain for parts of south Texas. The remnants of Harold are moving northwest across parts of northern Mexico, southwest Texas, and New Mexico today. The final advisory has been issued on Tropical Storm Harold by the National Hurricane Center.

TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM FRANKLIN NEARING HISPANIOLA… Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings continue for parts of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Turks & Caicos islands ahead of Tropical Storm Franklin pushing northward over the next several days. Franklin remains a highly sheared storm with nearly all of the convection (rain and storms) on the eastern side of the system. This poses a potential flooding threat for parts of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands over the next several days. Franklin is expected to move into the southwestern Atlantic Ocean in the days ahead, likely becoming a hurricane south of Bermuda in about 4-5 days. Local impacts in Alabama and northwest Florida are not expected due to Franklin.

TROPICS: TWO TROPICAL DISTURBANCES IN ATLANTIC… Two separate tropical disturbances are happening in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. One disturbance is associated with the remnants of what once was Tropical Storm Emily a few days ago. This system will continue to move northward across the eastern Atlantic Ocean, posing no threat to land anytime soon. The other tropical disturbance is associated with a tropical wave that moved off of the African continent. The tropical wave will gradually move northwest over the next few days over the open waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean. This tropical wave is well away from any land areas.

TROPICS: TROPICAL DISTURBANCE MAY FORM NEAR YUCATAN… There is a scenario that may happen over the next week or so that may feature a tropical disturbance forming in the southern Gulf of Mexico or far western Caribbean Sea. Some of the global models have hinted that we may see a tropical depression or tropical storm form in about one week near the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. For now, confidence in that idea is not high. This is something we will monitor over the next few days. Certainly nothing to worry about for now.
