MORE HOT DAYS AHEAD… That is a HOT 7 Day Forecast! Temperatures will be at or above 100 degrees over the next several days. Stay cool!
TEMPS NEAR 100° THIS AFTERNOON; ACTIVE TROPICS… Air temperatures will likely reach 100 degrees in many communities across south Alabama and northwest Florida this afternoon into the early evening hours. Mostly sunny skies are expected throughout the day. Rain chances remain near zero farther inland and very low near the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches today. The tropics continue to be quite active, but the good news is there are no signs of any tropical trouble directly affecting our local area anytime soon.
TD#9/HAROLD PUSHING TOWARD TEXAS COAST… Tropical Depression 9 formed yesterday over the west-central Gulf of Mexico. TD9/Tropical Storm Harold is rapidly pushing toward the south Texas coast this morning and will make landfall imminently. There is a risk of a few tornadoes today across parts of south Texas due to this system. The system will be a beneficial rainmaker for that particular area as well. Direct local impacts from TD9/Harold are not expected in south Alabama or northwest Florida other than the increased risk of dangerous rip currents at local beaches today, tonight, and into Wednesday.
TROPICAL STORM EMILY DISSIPATES… Tropical Storm Emily has dissipated in the central Atlantic Ocean, well away from land areas. Emily was a short-lived tropical storm, as expected. The remnant low pressure area will continue to move northwest across the central Atlantic Ocean, well away from any land areas.
TROPICAL STORM FRANKLIN MOVING TOWARD HISPANIOLA… Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for parts of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Turks & Caicos islands ahead of the arrival of Tropical Storm Franklin. The storm is currently located in the central Caribbean Sea, just south of Hispaniola. Serious flooding issues will be possible in Hispaniola before Franklin moves into the southwestern Atlantic Ocean on Thursday. No direct local impacts in south Alabama or northwest Florida are expected from Tropical Storm Franklin.
TROPICAL DEPRESSION GERT REMAINS WEAK… Tropical Depression 6 briefly strengthened yesterday morning and became Tropical Storm Gert. The system is weaker now and has been downgraded to tropical depression status. Gert is expected to dissipate today while moving northwest near the northern Leeward Islands.
70% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMING IN EASTERN ATLANTIC… Just southeast of the swirl of clouds that was Tropical Storm Emily, a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic Ocean is now moving northwest. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a 70% chance this system will become a named storm while moving northwest over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the days ahead. Land impacts in the United States are currently not expected, regardless of if formal development happens.
