EXTREMELY HOT THIS WEEK; TROPICAL SYSTEM IN GULF WELL TO OUR SOUTH… Triple digit heat is in the forecast in 6 of the next 7 days. High temperatures will be quite hot on this Monday with most spots nearing the upper-90s. Highs at or above 100 degrees are expected Tuesday through Sunday. See more about the extreme heat below. We’re also keeping a close watch on the tropics as one system passes to our south and the Gulf and SEVERAL others happen out in the Atlantic Ocean.

HOTTEST WEEK OF THE YEAR; TRIPLE DIGIT AIR TEMPS… While the next week will be quite hot and quite humid, I am particularly concerned about Wednesday. The air temperatures on Wednesday afternoon will be in the 103-105° range with heat index values in excess of 110° in many spots. Be ready for HOT, humid days, even hotter than our “normal summer heat” over the next several days. Unfortunately, overnight lows won’t provide much relief as most spots will have lows in the mid-70s and near 80 later this week.

GULF STORM HEADED TO TEXAS… The tropical disturbance passing well to our south in the central Gulf of Mexico is moving toward south Texas today into tomorrow. The system has a high (70%) chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next 24 hours while moving westward. Direct local impacts in south Alabama and northwest Florida are not expected from this developing tropical system, other than a high risk of rip currents at local beaches.

TROPICAL STORM EMILY IN ATLANTIC… Advisories were initiated yesterday on Tropical Storm Emily, located about halfway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles in the central Atlantic Ocean. Emily has maximum winds of 50 mph. The storm is expected to turn north this week and dissipate without directly affecting any land areas. Good news!

TROPICAL STORM FRANKLIN IN CARIBBEAN… Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings are posted for parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic ahead of the arrival of Tropical Storm Franklin tomorrow into Wednesday. Serious flooding and mudslide issues are always concerns anytime a tropical system comes close to the island of Hispaniola. Franklin will be no exception. The storm is forecast to cross Hispaniola on Wednesday before moving north and ultimately northeast into the Atlantic Ocean. Direct impacts in Alabama and northwest Florida are not expected because of Franklin, although it is a bit too early to rule out East Coast impacts.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION SIX TO DISSIPATE… A short-lived tropical depression (TD6) happened this weekend east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean. TD6 remains disorganized and will completely dissipate today. Excellent news!

60% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMING IN EASTERN ATLANTIC… Just southeast of Tropical Storm Emily, a tropical wave is currently bringing showers and thunderstorms to parts of the Cabo Verde Islands in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a 60% chance this system will become a named storm while moving northwest in the days ahead. Land impacts in the USA are currently not expected, regardless of if formal development happens.
