HEAT INDEX VALUES IN THE 105-110° RANGE THIS WEEKEND; WATCHING GULF EARLY NEXT WEEK… Very hot temperatures are expected across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Friday AND into the weekend. High temperatures will be in the upper-90s and near 100° with heat index values in excess of 105°. While a few, rogue P.M. pop-up showers and thunderstorms may happen across the region, the vast majority of us across the region will remain dry. Our focus will be on the tropics over the next several days as four tropical waves are being monitored in the Atlantic Basin for possible development into named tropical storms.

GULF STORM MAY DEVELOP NEXT WEEK AND PUSH TOWARD TEXAS… Model guidance continues to indicate an area of low pressure may form in the central or western Gulf of Mexico early next week, specifically on Monday or Tuesday. Confidence is increasing that the potential tropical system may move westward toward Texas or Louisiana. It remains a bit too early to ascertain specific local impacts because of this system in south Alabama or northwest Florida but there is a real chance impacts may be limited to beach impacts (an increased rip current risk). I will continue to monitor trends this weekend and bring you the latest information in the RedZone Weather app.

THREE SEPARATE TROPICAL WAVES IN THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC OCEAN… Not one, not two, but now three tropical waves are being tracked in the Atlantic Ocean between the Lesser Antilles and the western coast of Africa. It is too early to know if one or if any of these tropical waves will develop into named tropical storms OR if these systems will ever approach the continental United States.

HOTTER TEMPS THIS WEEKEND; WATCHING MULTIPLE SYSTEMS IN TROPICS… Heat index values will again be in the 105-110° range this weekend as temperatures creep upward today, tomorrow, and on Saturday. Rain chances will be low (not zero!) over the next several days before we see an uptick in scattered showers and storms on Monday. Our attention is now in the tropics where three distinct areas of concern have arisen in the Atlantic Basin. Details are below.

TROPICS: GULF DISTURBANCE MAY DEVELOP EARLY NEXT WEEK… An area of low pressure may form in the central or western Gulf of Mexico early next week. Multiple global models show a tropical system developing before pushing west toward the Texas or Louisiana coast. Keep in mind that uncertainty is high in terms of when the system actually develops or where it ultimately ends up. Nothing to stress or worry about at this time, but it is something we will need to keenly watch over the next several days.

TROPICS: TROPICAL WAVE IN CENTRAL ATLANTIC… There is a 50% chance of a tropical storm forming in the central Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the western coast of Africa. This system warrants keeping an eye on over the next several days as a general westward movement continues. From NHC: “Disorganized showers and thunderstorms located over the central tropical Atlantic are associated with an elongated trough of low pressure centered about 750 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form during the next several days while moving toward the west or west-northwest at about 10 mph across the central tropical Atlantic.”

TROPICS: TROPICAL WAVE IN EASTERN ATLANTIC… A separate tropical wave, located near the Cabo Verde Islands in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean, is moving northwest. Global models indicate a tropical depression or tropical storm may form this weekend while the system moves northwest over the open waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Most of the model guidance shows this system moving over the open ocean before dissipating next week. While all tropical systems in the Atlantic must be monitored, the early trends on this system have been encouraging so far.
