HEAT INDEX VALUES IN 110-115° RANGE TODAY; P.M. STORMS INTO WEEKEND… Hot temperatures will persist today and into the weekend with heat index values likely being at their peak this afternoon into the early evening hours. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely at times during the P.M. hours. There is a low-end risk of a few stronger storms later today, probably between 2PM and 8PM. We also are looking ahead into the weekend and early next week when pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be likely each day in the afternoon and evening hours.
LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK TODAY… The Storm Prediction Center has included all of south Alabama and northwest Florida in their low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk zone valid for today into this evening. This low-end risk is NOT because of a formal tornado risk, but instead in place because of a low-end risk of damaging wind gusts in any thunderstorms that can become strong or marginally severe this afternoon into this evening. Again, this risk is in place for ALL of south Alabama and northwest Florida. Be able to check the radar throughout the day and know that some of the storms may be on the strong side. Tornadoes are not expected today anywhere close by our local area.
TROPICS ARE QUIET, FOR NOW… The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean are quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop over the next 5-7 days. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens on September 11. Hurricane season runs through November 30 each year.
