RAIN LIKELY TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY; 3-4 INCHES OF TOTAL RAINFALL EXPECTED… Significant rainfall is expected across south Alabama and northwest Florida midweek as an area of low pressure develops to our south in the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the guidance I am seeing is consistently suggesting between 3 and 4 inches of total rainfall through Wednesday for nearly all of our local area. Right now, severe weather hazards like tornadoes and damaging winds do NOT seem likely. What will be possible, however, is a risk of isolated instances of flash flooding. Before we get to Tuesday and Wednesday, a dreary, moist, cloudy weather pattern is expected today and into Monday.
DREARY TODAY AND MONDAY… Skies will remain pretty much overcast today and on Monday. High temperatures will be around the 70 degree mark this afternoon with lows in the mid-50s by daybreak on Monday. Highs tomorrow will be in the upper-60s. Mist, sprinkles, and light rain will be possible over the next 48 hours.
FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE, HEAVY RAIN AT TIMES TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY… An area of low pressure will develop in the northwestern Gulf on Tuesday and gradually push eastward. Quite a bit of rain will happen across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and northwest Florida throughout the day on Tuesday into Wednesday. Right now, 3 to 4 inches of total rainfall seems likely across much of our local area through Wednesday. If heavy rain trains over the same areas for multiple hours, flash flooding may become a concern, particularly on Wednesday.
SEVERE WEATHER THREAT REMAINS LOW, FOR NOW… General thunderstorms will be possible on both Tuesday and Wednesday. For now, there seems to be no discernible, significant risk of tornadoes or damaging winds. A few claps of thunder may be possible Tuesday night into Wednesday, particularly near the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches but severe storms seem unlikely.
TROPICAL LOW IN CARIBBEAN TO DEVELOP THIS WEEK… An area of low pressure may develop in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, east of Nicaragua, in the days ahead. The National Hurricane Center indicates this area of concern has a 40% chance of becoming a named tropical storm later this week or into the upcoming weekend. The system is not a direct threat to Alabama or northwest Florida and probably won’t ever be.
