STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY… Isolated strong to severe storms capable of producing a few tornadoes and gusty winds are expected to develop late Sunday night into early Monday morning. A few of these storms may become severe in the overnight hours. While MOST communities across our local area will simply have rain and rowdy thunderstorms at times, a few of the storms may become severe. It seems like, based on the latest model guidance, the greater risk of severe weather may happen across inland areas of southwest Alabama. The overall severe weather risk will move from west to east across our region Sunday night. As always, if tornado warnings are required, we will “go live and stay live” until the tornado threat has passed.
SEVERE WEATHER TIMING – SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING… 10PM Sunday night to 9AM Monday morning is the 11 hour window when strong to severe thunderstorms seem most likely to happen across southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. The overall risk will start in parts of west Alabama and spread eastward throughout the night and into the early morning hours. The risk will end after sunrise as a cold front crosses our area from northwest to southeast.
MAIN HAZARD CONCERNS: TORNADOES & GUSTY WINDS… A few tornadoes and damaging wind gusts capable of knocking down trees will be the concerns with this passing weather system. Severe storms are likely to remain isolated in nature, meaning MOST communities across our region will simply have rain, loud thunder, and lightning at times. There is a chance the lightning output with this weather system is more prolific than the last few weather systems that have crossed our region. Don’t be surprised to be woken up tomorrow night by a loud clap of thunder. A few of the thunderstorms may ramp up to strong or severe levels and become capable of producing a tornado or two along with damaging straight line wind gusts. Any tornadoes that develop probably will not last long, but as I always say, if a tornado affects you, it’s a big deal. Have a way to hear warnings on Sunday night into Monday morning.
LEVEL 2 (OUT OF 5) SEVERE WEATHER RISK… If you’re new to our local area, this may be your first time going through a Level 2 (out of 5) severe weather risk. A Level 2 risk means that isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible, aka not everyone will have severe storms tomorrow night. A few tornadoes will be possible, but MOST communities won’t have a tornado. It is imperative that everyone has multiple ways to hear warnings on Sunday night into Monday morning. The way this works is we go live on Facebook and YouTube (also accessible in our free RedZone Weather app) whenever tornado warnings are required for southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. We have covered every, single tornado warning locally since late 2015. Details about our coverage policy can be found at redzoneweather.com/coverage
APP ALERTS… Many updates will be posted throughout the day in the RedZone Weather app. redzoneweather.com/app is the link for the free download.
