CLOUDS AROUND FOR ECLIPSE VIEWING TODAY; SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY… Mostly cloudy skies are likely across the western half of our region with mostly sunny skies on the eastern side of the region this afternoon as a partial solar eclipse (as viewed from our local area) takes place. This will be a total solar eclipse for parts of Texas, Arkansas, and states to the northeast. No part of Alabama or Florida will be in the direct path of totality, meaning the sun will never be fully obscured. Clouds are expected to be thicker on the western side of our region in places like Mobile, Daphne, Thomasville, Chatom, and Jackson. Locales farther east near Destin, Milton, Gulf Breeze, Pensacola, Brewton, Andalusia, Evergreen, and Greenville have a higher chance of sunnier skies, meaning the eclipse will probably be better viewed in those communities. High temperatures on this Monday will be in the low-80s across the region. We are looking ahead to Wednesday when severe thunderstorms will become possible across the local area.
PLEASE USE PROPER EYEWEAR FOR ECLIPSE VIEWING… If you don’t have proper eclipse glasses or eyewear protection to view the solar eclipse this afternoon, please do not try. Significant eye damage can happen if you look straight at the sun. Again, this will NOT be a total solar eclipse for south Alabama or northwest Florida. Only part of the sun will be obscured. 1:50PM to 2PM is the window for maximum obscurity (70-85% of the sun will be obscured locally).
FEW SHOWERS AROUND THIS EVENING… Spotty showers will become possible as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. The greatest chance of rain today will happen across west Alabama in areas f west of the Alabama River. Isolated showers will also be possible region wide after sunset, but I expect most of the showers to remain quite spotty in nature. Most locales will not have rain today.
ISOLATED SHOWERS POSSIBLE TUESDAY… Tomorrow will be quite similar to today (with no eclipse!). Spotty showers will be possible throughout the day with high temperatures in the upper-70s and near the 80 degree mark. Severe thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday across parts of Texas and Louisiana.
SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY EVENING… Tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail will become possible across much of the Deep South, including across south Alabama and northwest Florida, on Wednesday. Locally, it looks like the P.M. hours are when our chance of strong to severe storms seem most likely to happen on Wednesday. We will be able to get more specific about details over the next 48 hours, but plan on widespread rain and thunderstorms for much of the day on Wednesday with a chance of some of the storms becoming strong.
HEAVY RAIN LIKELY AT TIMES WEDNESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY NIGHT… In addition to the severe weather risk setting up Wednesday, I am also becoming more concerned about the risk of flash flooding. 3 to 5 inches of total rainfall is expected on Wednesday with isolated higher amounts. Flash flooding may quickly become a problem if storms train over the same areas.
CLEARING SKIES THURSDAY… Isolated showers will be possible in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday ahead of clearing skies in the late morning and early afternoon hours. High temperatures on Thursday will be in the 70s.
NICE, MILD WEATHER THIS WEEKEND… The upcoming weekend looks QUITE nice with mostly sunny skies expected on both Friday and Saturday. Highs will be in the upper-70s and near 80.
