NICE FRIDAY & GREAT WEATHER THIS WEEKEND… High temperatures will be in the upper-80s today and into the weekend with mostly sunny skies today, tomorrow, and on Sunday morning. A few showers may become possible on Sunday evening but I expect most spots to remain dry throughout the weekend. If you’re headed to a high school football game this evening, I expect mainly clear conditions with game time temperatures near 80 at kickoff, falling into the 70s by the end of the games. The forecast looks quite nice for Saturday and Sunday as well with mostly sunny skies each day.

POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE 16 IN S.W. ATLANTIC… The area of disturbed weather in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, located north of The Bahamas and east of Florida, has been designated Potential Tropical Cyclone 16. This designation allows the National Hurricane Center to go ahead and post tropical storm watches and warnings when necessary even though a low-level center of circulation has not formed. Tropical storm force winds are already occurring with this system despite the absence of a low-level center, so far. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Cape Fear, North Carolina to Fenwick Island, Delaware. Storm Surge Watches and Warnings are also in effect. Heavy rain, gusty winds, and flash flooding will all be concerns in parts of eastern North Carolina and Virginia this weekend into early next week.

NIGEL ON THE WAY OUT… Hurricane Nigel is in a very remote part of the northern Atlantic Ocean, located about 700 miles northwest of The Azores islands. The final advisory will be issued soon for Nigel as the system is quickly becoming an extratropical system. Nigel is no threat to any land areas over the weekend or into early next week.

TROPICAL WAVE IN EASTERN ATLANTIC… The tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic Ocean we have been tracking over the last several days is slated to move into an environment this weekend that is supportive of further development. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is an 80% chance of the system becoming a named tropical storm soon. From NHC: “Showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad area of low pressure a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands are showing signs of organization. Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend or early next week while the system moves generally westward at 10 to 15 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.”

GULF AND CARIBBEAN CONTINUE TO BE QUIET… The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea remain quiet for now. No tropical storms are expected to develop over the next 5-7 days in the Gulf or the Caribbean Sea. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
