HOTTER TEMPERATURES TODAY, TOMORROW, AND INTO WEEKEND… Get ready for the hottest stretch of temperatures so far this year as high temperatures over the next few days rise into the mid- to upper-90s. Heat index values this afternoon will be in the triple digit range. Humidity values will also be increased compared to previous days. Rain chances will be ever so slightly increased today, tomorrow, and Saturday ahead of much higher rain chances on Sunday into Monday. Scattered storms will come back into the forecast in that range. The tropics are heating up as well but fortunately, we have no imminent, direct concerns for south Alabama or northwest Florida.
SCATTERED STORMS LIKELY SUNDAY INTO MONDAY… Rain chances will rise on Sunday and Monday as scattered to numerous pop-up showers and thunderstorms develop, primarily (although not exclusively) in the afternoon and evening hours each day. High temperatures will be in the low-90s each day. There is a chance some pockets of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms happen, but widespread severe weather is not expected.
TROPICS: DISTURBANCE EAST OF FLORIDA PENINSULA IN ATLANTIC…An area of low pressure in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, located north of The Bahamas and just to the east of the Florida Peninsula, is moving northeast. This system brought significant rain totals and extreme flash flooding to parts of south Florida yesterday. Atmospheric conditions are only marginally favorable for development, but a brief named tropical storm may form while the system moves northeast. Direct local impacts in south Alabama and northwest Florida are not expected, regardless of if formal classification happens.
TROPICS: SOUTHERN GULF & BAY OF CAMPECHE HOTSPOT… In addition to the disturbance located north of The Bahamas, we are also watching model trends that support a potential tropical system developing in the far southern Gulf and the Bay of Campeche. From NHC: “A broad area of low pressure could form over the weekend across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some slow development early next week while the system moves slowly westward or west-northwestward.”
