NUMEROUS STORMS TODAY; SLIGHTLY COOLER BY MIDWEEK; TROPICAL UPDATE… The radar display has lit up like a Christmas tree again today with numerous small showers and thunderstorms bubbling up in the heat of the day. These are seabreeze-induced pop-up thunderstorms capable of producing localized downpours of heavy rain, gusty winds, and cloud-to-ground lightning. These storms will be a fixture of our weather pattern over the next 7 days. Severe weather is not expected today. We’re also looking ahead to midweek when we will have a brief surge of slightly cooler, drier air move in from the north. INVEST 94L has also grabbed our attention in the tropics. Plenty to discuss on this Sunday – let’s talk details…
MANY SMALL POP-UP STORMS THIS AFTERNOON… At the time this forecast video is being produced (1:15PM), we note numerous showers and thunderstorms are happening across the region. The heaviest rain at the moment is falling near Crestview, Baker, Dixonville, Brewton, Prichard, Satsuma, and Poarch. Storms will continue to bubble up over the next several hours before sunset. You can keep tabs on the latest radar updates in the RedZone Weather app. redzoneweather.com/app is the link for the free download. High temperatures will peak in the upper-80s in many spots across the region today.
INVEST 94L IN SOUTHWESTERN ATLANTIC… There is a tropical wave approaching The Bahamas from the east that has been designated as INVEST 94L. The National Hurricane Center says this system has a 20% chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next 5 days. Nearly all models show this tropical wave approaching the southern part of the Florida Peninsula in 2-3 days before taking a sharp right turn to the north. This will likely mean increased rain chances for southern Florida near Miami and Fort Lauderdale. No local impacts in south Alabama or northwest Florida are expected, regardless of if formal development happens. The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea remain quiet.
HOT ON MONDAY WITH P.M. STORMS… Before the rare, July cold front arrives on Tuesday, we have another hot, humid day coming up for Monday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to pop up in the heat of the day. High temperatures will rise to around 91° in most spots.
NUMEROUS STORMS LIKELY ON TUESDAY… Rain chances will increase on Tuesday ahead of the passage of a cold front that will move across our area from north to south. We’ll call it a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms for now. Based on the latest model data, we may have to adjust the rain chance for Tuesday higher to account for the numerous showers and thunderstorms that are expected. High temperatures will drop back into the upper-80s on Tuesday afternoon.
MORE POP-UP STORMS FOR THE END OF THE WEEK… Rain chances for inland areas will likely be suppressed somewhat by the slightly cooler, drier air in place, but there still will be quite a few pop-up thunderstorms on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in our coastal areas. High temperatures will be in the mid-80s each day with morning lows around 70°.
