THUNDERSTORMS LIKELY THIS EVENING; UNSETTLED WEEK AHEAD… Numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Severe weather is not expected, but some of the storms could be on the strong side with cloud-to-ground lightning being the main concern. High temperatures will be in the low- to mid-90s across the region. The next 7 days look seasonal, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. Let’s look at details…

CONSISTENT CHANCE OF RAIN & STORMS IN P.M. HOURS… There is (at minimum) a 40-50% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours over the next week. These storms will pop up with very little notice. Heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning will be staples of the stronger storms. High temperatures will be in the low- to mid-90s with morning lows in the low-70s.

RAIN AMOUNTS WILL VARY WILDLY… Most spots locally will pick up over 1-2” of rain in total over the next few days. Some isolated spots may have very little rain, however. This is the classic nature of the pop-up storms of summer.

LATEST ON THE TROPICS… The National Hurricane Center has revised development chances downward for the area of low pressure off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia. From their discussion this morning: “A low pressure area located about 100 miles east of Norfolk, Virginia, is producing limited shower and thunderstorm activity. This low is moving northeastward, away from the United States, and has only a slight chance to significantly organize through tonight before upper-level winds become unfavorable for further development.” Elsewhere, the tropics are quiet. Good news!
