HARD FREEZE FOR NEXT TWO NIGHTS; SUNNY, COLD START TO WEEK… Brrr! It is quite cold today across south Alabama and northwest Florida as we endure our coldest temperatures of the year 2020 so far. Overnight lows were in the 20s in many spots across the region, including in some of the coastal areas. Temperatures won’t rebound much today with most locales expected to peak in the mid- to upper-40s. If you’re headed out on this holiday Monday, make sure you have the jackets handy. Other than the cold, we actually have a nice few days on tap with plenty of sunshine in the forecast for today, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Our next chance of rain will happen on Thursday. Let’s look at your forecast details.
SUNNY, COLD MONDAY… We’ll be completely sunny throughout the day across the region, but the brisk north wind will make the air feel colder than the actual temperature. High temperatures this afternoon around 2PM will peak in the 45-49° range. Factor in the 5-15 mph wind, and you get a wind chill value in the upper-30s and low-40s. Big takeaway: Quite cold today!
LONG DURATION FREEZE TONIGHT… Temperatures will quickly nosedive into the 30s after sunset. I expect most locales north of I-10 to be below 32 degrees by 11PM tonight. That means most spots will be BELOW freezing for 7-10 hours through 8-9AM on Tuesday. This will be a hard freeze. Keep in mind that an official “Hard Freeze Warning” won’t be issued as we are technically not near our formal growing season.
“4 P’S OF COLD WEATHER”… 1) Check on elderly PEOPLE and make sure they have adequate heating sources before tonight. 2) Bring in outside PETS. 3) Bring in outdoor potted PLANTS or cover them. 4) Wrap PIPES and drip outdoor faucets.
ANOTHER HARD FREEZE TUESDAY NIGHT… I expect the hard freeze tomorrow night into early Wednesday morning to be a bit longer (by 1-2 additional hours) with overnight lows being 1 to 2 degrees lower in the 20s.
CLOUDS INCREASE WEDNESDAY… Cloud coverage will increase on Wednesday ahead of our rain chance on Thursday into Friday. High temperatures on Wednesday will finally crack the 50 degree mark in many spots. No rain is likely on Wednesday.
NEXT RAIN CHANCE THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY… Showers, with perhaps a few thunderstorms, will become possible Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. Friday is shaping up to be quite wet with numerous showers (and maybe a few general thunderstorms) expected. For now, severe weather parameters remain very low due to the lack of instability expected.
