SCATTERED P.M. STORMS TODAY; TROPICAL WAVE MOVING TOWARD GULF… We’re now watching two tropical waves, both in the Atlantic Ocean, that have a chance of developing into tropical storms later this week or perhaps in the upcoming weekend. One tropical wave will move into the Gulf of Mexico later this week and potentially become a tropical storm as it moves toward the Texas and Louisiana coast. The other tropical wave is emerging from the African continent now and will cross the Atlantic over the next week. Locally, our weather pattern won’t be much different this week because of either of these systems. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will bubble up each day, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours. High temperatures are slated to be in the low- to mid-90s with morning lows in the low-70s. Let’s look at your Monday forecast details.

TROPICAL WAVE TO MOVE INTO GULF LATER THIS WEEK… There continues to be a rather low (20-30%) chance of a tropical storm forming in the southern or central Gulf of Mexico later this week. There is a tropical wave currently situated a bit north of Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. This tropical wave is currently in a pretty hostile environment that will prevent any imminent development of the system. Environmental conditions will become more favorable as we get into the latter half of the week when the tropical wave is over the southern Gulf. Model indications have been quite consistent in taking the system toward the Louisiana or Texas coast. If this scenario happened, obviously that would limit potential local impacts in south Alabama and northwest Florida other than perhaps increased rain chances and high waves & rip currents at the local beaches. Regardless of if formal development happens, this system has the makings of being a big rainmaker for parts of southern Louisiana and east Texas.

SECOND, SEPARATE WAVE IN ATLANTIC… In addition to the tropical wave north of Hispaniola, a second tropical wave is now catching our eye in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean. This tropical wave has recently moved off of the western coast of Africa. Environmental conditions across the central Atlantic may become favorable later this week for development of this system. Just like the other tropical wave, this is certainly nothing to worry about. Just something to be aware of like all tropical systems in hurricane season. We’ll keep watching and bring you the latest as this tropical wave moves eastward.

POP-UP STORMS AT TIMES TODAY… Similar to yesterday, we have a chance of showers and thunderstorms as we go into the afternoon and evening hours. Storms could be loud at times, producing quite a bit of lightning and thunder. Gusty winds and very heavy downpours of rain will be possible in the strongest of the storms. Widespread severe weather, however, is not expected today. High temperatures on this Monday will peak in the mid-90s with heat index values possibly as high as 105° in some spots.

MORE OF THE SAME THIS WEEK… We see a consistent, summertime pattern over the next 7 days with a chance of showers and storms in the afternoons with plenty of heat and humidity. High temperatures will be in the 90s with lows in the 70s. See the 7 Day Forecast graphic in the video for specifics.

HIGHER RAIN CHANCES THIS WEEKEND… Early indications point to rain chances being a bit higher this weekend, perhaps due to some moisture being flung into our region from the south from the passing tropical system. Even with this enhanced area of moisture, odds are we won’t have an “all day washout” Friday through Sunday although there inevitably will be showers and storms around at times. High temperatures will likely again be in the 90s with morning lows in the 70s this weekend.
