BROKEN LINE OF STORMS… A broken line of showers and storms is paralleling the I-65 corridor as of 8:10PM. These storms are producing loud thunder, but are under severe limits. This line of storms will gradually fade away over the next few hours as it moves southeast.
A broken line of showers and thunderstorms will move across our region over the next few hours. Storms will enter Clarke and Washington counties over the next hour. Widespread severe weather is NOT expected. pic.twitter.com/vMHvtCJuoH

We are completely dry across the region as of 1:21PM. Could have a few showers and storms this evening but I expect most spots to remain dry. Temperatures are near 90° inland with mid-80s closer to the beaches. ?

SCATTERED STORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE WEEKEND… We finally have some rain in the forecast! A few showers and thunderstorms will become possible this afternoon and in the afternoons ahead this weekend. Widespread severe weather is not expected today or this weekend, but a few of the storms could be locally intense, with heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, and perhaps even gusty winds in the strongest of the storms. High temperatures today and this weekend will be in the upper-80s near the coast and near 90 degrees inland. We get a break from the scattered storms on Monday and Tuesday ahead of increasing rain chances in the latter half of the upcoming week. A few more Friday morning forecast notes are below.
RAIN AND STORMS POSSIBLE AT TIMES THROUGH SUNDAY… Let me be clear that not every community will have rain or thunderstorms today or this weekend. Storms will be fairly scattered in nature and there is no way to know exactly where storms are going to fire up. These thunderstorms are called “pulse storms” as they fire up very quickly and dissipate shortly thereafter. Most thunderstorms that happen in late spring and summer around our region are not severe, but these storms can “pack a punch” at times with localized, torrential downpours of rain and lots of lightning.
MAINLY SUNNY FOR MEMORIAL DAY MONDAY… We trend drier, briefly, on Memorial Day Monday. Highs on Monday will rise into the low-90s across much of our region.
MORE SHOWERS & STORMS NEXT WEEK… Rain chances start to rise Tuesday into Wednesday as we begin to settle into a typical summertime pattern. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will become the norm each day with high temperatures near 90 and morning lows around 70.
TROPICS QUIET… The National Hurricane Center continues to indicate that no tropical storms are expected to form over the next 5-7 days anywhere across the Atlantic Basin. The basin includes the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and northern Atlantic Ocean. The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season will officially kick off on Tuesday, June 1.

⛈ We may have some RAIN this afternoon into this evening! Not everyone will get measurable rain today, but some communities will. High temperatures will be in the low-90s. pic.twitter.com/2bs8eswXbF

RAIN IS FINALLY IN THE FORECAST… After days of mostly dry conditions, tomorrow we will begin to see a few more showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours. Most locales WILL remain dry tomorrow and into the weekend, but there will be “splash and dash” showers and thunderstorms at times tomorrow and into the weekend. Severe weather is not expected locally Friday or this weekend. High temperatures are slated to be near the 90 degree mark over the next few days.
RILEY GREEN FORECAST… One of the biggest events along the Gulf Coast this Memorial Day weekend will be the Riley Green concert at The Wharf in Orange Beach. Mostly sunny skies are expected at Orange Beach tomorrow evening with temperatures near 80 degrees by 7PM. Temperatures will fall into the upper-70s by the conclusion of the concert. I’ll be there tomorrow! Please say hello if you’re headed there as well.
RADAR SITE KMOB HAS SIGNIFICANT FAILURE… The local National Weather Service sent out a Public Information Statement this morning indicating that our local radar (KMOB at the Mobile Regional Airport) will be down for several weeks. “A physical failure on the Mobile, AL, WSR-88D Doppler radar operated by the NOAA National Weather Service in Mobile, AL, has rendered the radar inoperable and it will be out of service for the next few weeks. NWS will begin repairs as quickly as possible, with an estimated return to service date in mid-June. A team from the Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma, determined this week that the bull gear, the primary gear for turning the radar antenna dish, has failed. The radar will be out of service until the bull gear is repaired. Technicians from the Radar Operations Center in Norman, OK, will be on-site at Mobile by the middle of next week to begin the repairs. Because the NEXRAD network was designed to have overlapping coverage, our local area will have data available from surrounding radars, including NEXRADs from NWS Slidell/New Orleans, NWS Jackson, MS, NWS Birmingham, AL, Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB), Ft. Rucker, and Eglin AFB.”
NO SEVERE WEATHER OR TROPICAL ISSUES IN SIGHT… Some showers and general thunderstorms are in the forecast for the next several days, but what I am NOT seeing is an organized risk of strong to severe storms OR any tropical/hurricane issues over the next 5 to 7 days. The next 7-10 days will mainly feature P.M. pop-up showers and storms that don’t last very long and are localized, small, and not highly impactful. The biggest concern in these pop-up storms: Cloud-to-ground lightning. It is important to keep tabs on the radar anytime you have storms around as lightning is a major concern. You can watch the radar every moment of the day in the RedZone Weather app in the Radar tab. I’ll have radar updates posted as needed over the next few days in the Home/Refresh main part of the app as well.

MAINLY SUNNY TODAY; FEW STORMS AROUND THIS WEEKEND… Today is the first day that rain chances are not exactly at zero in quite awhile! Don’t get me wrong, rain chances are in the 0-10% chance range today, but that is a sign of things to come this weekend when we will have slightly higher rain chances! High temperatures on this Thursday will be in the low-90s across much of the area with upper-80s expected at the immediate coast. This weekend, we are expecting a few showers at times, particularly Saturday afternoon into the evening hours. Highs this weekend will remain in the mid- to upper-90s with some spots inevitably hitting the 90 degree mark. A few more Thursday morning forecast details are below.
SCATTERED STORMS THIS WEEKEND… “Splash and dash” showers and thunderstorms will be possible this weekend. While widespread severe weather is not expected, there could be a few storms at times, including some storms that may produce loud thunder and cloud-to-ground lightning. Keep in mind that most communities will likely not have rain this weekend, but SOME will. I’ll have radar updates posted throughout the weekend as needed in the RedZone Weather app.
LOW RAIN CHANCES INTO NEXT WEEK… Memorial Day Monday will be seasonal with warm temperatures. High temps will be in the upper-80s and near 90. Rain chances remain low, but not entirely zero, as we go into next week. No organized severe weather risks are noted as we go into next week, thankfully.
TROPICS QUIET… No issues to report this morning in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, or Atlantic Ocean in terms of tropical storms. No new tropical storm formation is expected over the next 5-7 days. The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially kicks off on June 1.
