NUMEROUS STORMS AROUND TODAY AND THURSDAY; DRY, NICE WEEKEND AHEAD… Thunderstorms will be loud at times today as our wet, unsettled weather pattern continues across the region. Showers and thunderstorms will be most numerous at midday and into the afternoon hours but we note that we already have a few showers and storms around this morning. Storms will likely linger into the evening hours. While the overall severe weather risk is low today, it is not zero. The Storm Prediction Center maintains the entire local area in their low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk zone valid for today. We note the tornado risk is very low, but not entirely zero across west Alabama in parts of Mobile, Baldwin, Monroe, Clarke, and Washington counties. We have another active weather day ahead for Thursday ahead of a much drier, nicer weekend. A few more Wednesday morning forecast notes are below.
LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK TODAY AND THURSDAY… Today, the main concern in any storms that can briefly become strong or marginally severe is not tornadoes. The main concerns will be damaging wind gusts and the potential for large hail. The tornado risk is not entirely zero today, but it is LOW. The greatest chance for severe storms today will happen in areas along and west of the Alabama River in west Alabama. I will have radar updates posted as needed today in the RedZone Weather app.
WHAT TO EXPECT – THROUGHOUT THE DAY… Scattered rain and thunderstorms will be the norm throughout the day. There is, unfortunately, no way to really pinpoint exactly when and where storms will fire up on a day like today, but we know the atmospheric setup is ripe for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms today. High temperatures on this Wednesday will be in the mid-80s.
1-3 INCHES OF TOTAL RAINFALL THROUGH TOMORROW… While rain will come and go throughout the day today and on Thursday, it looks like most of our area will pick up between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall in total. Greater rain amounts (2-3″) are expected to happen across parts of west Alabama.
MUCH BETTER WEATHER THIS WEEKEND… Sunshine returns on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. Rain is unlikely this weekend. High temperatures will be closer to the 90 degree mark with morning lows in the 60s.
