TROPICAL STORM MAY DEVELOP THIS WEEKEND OR NEXT WEEK IN ATLANTIC… The 2022 Hurricane Season is likely to crank up over the next week or so as a new tropical storm could form in the Atlantic Ocean. Let’s get this out of the way first: There is no one, and I mean truly no one, that can say for sure where this system will end up. There is a real chance this system moves west, crossing the Leeward Islands some time next week, before moving west across the Caribbean Sea. Could this system move into the Gulf of Mexico eventually? Yes. Is there a very high chance at this point the system does NOT move into the Gulf? Also yes.
TROPICAL WAVE MOVING WEST… What we know this evening is that a tropical wave that emerged from the western part of Africa is moving west across the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Environmental conditions out ahead of this tropical wave seem favorable for the development of a tropical storm this weekend or early next week. Note that regardless of if development happens or not, this system will not be a direct threat to any land areas over the next 5 days.
LONG RANGE IDEAS… While there is very little skill in forecasting tropical systems beyond 5 days out, we note that the major, global weather models are trending toward a potential solution that brings this system westward through the Caribbean Sea. It is impossible to know which (if any) land masses will be affected, at this stage. The big takeaway here: Stay tuned. I’ll have more updates in the next several days posted in the RedZone Weather app.
LOCALLY, STORMS RETURN TOMORROW… We had one lone storm today locally. It happened in Clarke County. The storm actually produced some tree damage near Thomasville and Tallahatta Springs. Tomorrow (Friday), more pop-up thunderstorms are expected to happen across the region. I expect storms to be more numerous tomorrow than the last few days. This will be welcome rain for many communities for sure, although keep in mind that some communities will not have rain tomorrow. If you miss the rain on Friday, rain chances are slated to rise considerably this weekend into early next week. Heat relief is on the way as well as we return to a more seasonal temperature pattern. Good news!
