P.M. STORMS TODAY; HIGHER RAIN CHANCES LATER IN WEEK… Hot temperatures and scattered P.M. thunderstorms will be the norm over the next 5 days across our local area. Thunderstorms will pop up this afternoon into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Localized areas of heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, and gusty winds will be possible in the stronger storms. Not every community will have rain before the end of the day, but some will. This will generally be our weather pattern over the next 5-7 days. High temperatures will be in the low-90s today.
TROPICS REMAIN QUIET… The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean remain quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop this week. I have received several questions this weekend asking if the lack of tropical activity is “normal” for this time of year. We have had multiple hyperactive hurricane seasons that have skewed our perception, overall. So the answer is a resounding, YES. It is normal to have intraseason “lulls” in tropical activity in June, July, August, and November. Late August, September, and October represent the climatological peak of hurricane season when these lulls in activity are less common.
