VERY HOT TEMPS OVER NEXT FEW DAYS; EXCESSIVE HEAT ALERTS; P.M. STORMS… We are kicking off what will be a 4-5 day streak of the hottest temperatures so far in 2023. High temperatures on this Tuesday will be in the mid- to upper-90s. Factor in the humidity and you get a heat index value of 108-110° this afternoon. While our region typically has hot temperatures in the summer, this is what will be classified as a heat wave. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon into this evening. Not everyone will have rain before the end of the day but some communities inevitably will. Cloud-to-ground lightning will be likely in the storms this afternoon. Fortunately, there is no formal risk of severe storms today.
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING NEAR COAST; HEAT ADVISORY INLAND… An uncommon Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for coastal zones on this Tuesday. This uncommon product is issued due to the potential for 115° heat index values. A Heat Advisory is in effect for many more communities farther inland today due to heat index values as high as 110° this afternoon into the early evening hours. I expect more heat advisories and heat warnings to be required over the next several days.
TROPICAL UPDATE… The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop over the next 5 days. The remnant low pressure area associated with what was Tropical Storm Cindy is moving north in the Atlantic Ocean. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a 30% chance of the system strengthening back to tropical storm status over the North Atlantic Ocean in a few days. Direct U.S. impacts are not expected at this time.
