FEW STORMS IN WEST ALABAMA TODAY; HIGHER RAIN CHANCES REGIONWIDE TUESDAY… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will become possible today across parts of the local area, specifically in west Alabama where rain chances are expected to be higher today. Everyone locally will have at least some chance of rain through Wednesday. Any rain that happens will be welcome as much of the area is now involved in the significant drought zone. High temperatures will be in the low-90s today. There is no formal risk of severe weather anywhere close by today, although some of the storms that happen later today will be capable of producing pockets of heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, and gusty winds.
TROPICS: LOW PRESSURE AREA IN SOUTHERN GULF… An area of disturbed weather in the southern Gulf has a very low (10%) chance of briefly becoming a tropical storm over the next few days before environmental conditions become unfavorable for further development. The system will never directly affect south Alabama or northwest Florida.
TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM PHILIPPE IN ATLANTIC… Tropical Storm Philippe formed over the weekend in the central Atlantic Ocean. Philippe is well away from land areas and is not expected to threaten land areas directly over the next 5 days. Most of the major global models show continued movement of Philippe to the northwest in the days ahead. While it is a bit too early to completely rule out impacts in North America, the trends have been encouraging so far, with most models showing Philippe moving north into the northern Atlantic Ocean.
TROPICS: TROPICAL WAVE SOUTH OF CABO VERDE ISLANDS… There is a 60% chance of a new tropical storm forming in the central Atlantic Ocean, as (separate) Tropical Storm Philippe moves west and out of the area. A tropical wave located a few hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands is expected to continue moving generally northwest. This system will move into an environment that is supportive for further development and a tropical storm may form in the middle part of the week. Well too early to know exactly where this system will ultimately end up.
TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM OPHELIA DISSIPATED… Tropical Storm Ophelia formed on Friday before making landfall in North Carolina with maximum winds near 70 mph. Ophelia has since dissipated and is no longer a tropical storm.
