LOWS BELOW FREEZING NEXT TWO NIGHTS; RAIN LIKELY AT TIMES ON NEW YEAR’S DAY… Cold temperatures will persist today, tonight, and into the weekend. High temperatures on this Friday will only be in the low-50s across the region. Some spots, especially north of the U.S. Highway 84 corridor across inland areas of southwest Alabama, will only top out in the upper-40s today. The good news is we will have plenty of sunshine throughout the day today and on Saturday. Snow flurries may happen well to our north tonight as a cold core upper low continues to slowly move east across the Tennessee Valley region. No snow or mixed precipitation is in the forecast for south Alabama or northwest Florida.
COLD TEMPS FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS… No real changes to the forecast logic as we go into the New Year’s Eve celebrations on Sunday: Dry conditions will prevail on Sunday night into Monday in the pre-dawn hours with temperatures likely to be near 40 degrees as we kick off 2024 at midnight on Sunday night. No rain, no snow, no mixed precipitation is expected during the New Year’s celebrations across our local area. We are expecting rain during the daytime hours of New Year’s Day on Monday, however.
RAIN LIKELY AT TIMES MONDAY… Rain is expected at times on Monday during the daytime hours as an area of low pressure passes to our south in the northern Gulf of Mexico. High temperatures on Monday will be around the 60 degree mark. If you have outdoor New Year’s Day plans, make sure to have an indoor backup plan ready as scattered showers are likely at times throughout the day. High temperatures on Monday will be in the low-60s.
MORE RAIN POSSIBLE MIDWEEK… Our next chance of rain (after New Year’s Day Monday) happens on Wednesday into Wednesday night as another area of low pressure moves by our region. Scattered showers will become likely on Wednesday morning and likely linger for much of the day. The good news is severe storms seem unlikely, but the bad news is this will be a rather cold and miserable rain with high temperatures only expected to be in the mid-50s on Wednesday.
