SNOW TO REMAIN WELL TO OUR NORTH; COLD DAYS THRU SATURDAY; LOWS BELOW FREEZING… No snow or mixed precipitation is in the forecast for south Alabama or northwest Florida at this point, plain and simple. We will have rain moving through our region on New Year’s Day Monday but no snow is in the forecast. I have had several questions about this over the last 24 hours, presumably because there are parts of North Alabama that may see a few snow flurries over the next day or so. Locally, cold temperatures are here to stay for awhile. High temperatures will be in the low-50s today with an abundance of sunshine likely throughout the day.

MAINLY SUNNY THRU SATURDAY; QUITE COLD… A few lingering clouds this morning will give way to mostly sunny skies this afternoon into the evening hours. Keep those jackets handy throughout the day and certainly into tonight. High temperatures will only be in the low-50s today. Temperatures will quickly fall into the low-40s after sunset. Overnight lows will be in the upper-20s inland with low-30s likely closer to the coast. Please be aware that tonight will be the first of THREE nights with below freezing temperatures.

SNOW FLURRIES TO THE NORTH TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY… Just to be abundantly clear, snow nor mixed precipitation is expected across south Alabama and northwest Florida. There may be a few snow flurries and perhaps even a very light accumulation of snow across the higher terrain of northeast Alabama. This is due to a cold core upper-low pressure area moving through the Tennessee Valley region.

NEW YEAR’S EVE LIKELY TO BE COLD… Dry conditions will prevail on Sunday night into Monday, most likely, with temperatures likely to be near 40 degrees as we kick off 2024 at midnight on Sunday night. No rain, no snow, no mixed precipitation is expected during the New Year’s celebrations across our local area. We are expecting rain during the daytime hours of Monday, however.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE: NEW YEAR’S DAY… Our next chance of rain happens on the first day of 2024 on Monday. Scattered showers will move in likely in the morning hours with rain being possible throughout the midday and afternoon hours. High temperatures for New Year’s Day will likely be in the upper-50s and near 60 degrees in most spots.

BELOW FREEZING TEMPS UPCOMING INTO THE WEEKEND; FLURRIES TO OUR NORTH… High temperatures will be in the 60s today ahead of sharply colder temperatures for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Highs tomorrow into the weekend will be in the low-50s. Some communities may even have highs in the upper-40s on Friday! Overnight lows will be below freezing each night from Thursday night through Saturday night. A cold core upper-low pressure area is pushing southeast into the Tennessee Valley region of north Alabama and Tennessee tomorrow into Friday. This feature may cause a few snow flurries in the far northern part of Alabama. Impacts will remain limited, most likely.

COLD CORE UPPER LOW TO THE NORTH… A few snow flurries may happen Thursday night into Friday as a cold core upper low pushes east across Tennessee and north Alabama. Moisture content remains quite limited, meaning any snow or flurries that happen probably won’t accumulate, at least in Alabama. This feature will not cause any rain or snow in south Alabama or northwest Florida.

BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY NIGHTS… Low temperatures tonight will be in the low-40s closer to the coast and upper-30s farther inland. Today is the day, however, that outdoor plants should be moved inside as temperatures tomorrow will be quite cold with highs only in the 50s. This “cold snap” will last into the weekend. No rain or precipitation is expected Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

MOSTLY CLOUDY TUESDAY; MUCH COLDER AIR COMING LATER THIS WEEK… Clouds are expected to linger for much of the day on this Tuesday. Temperatures won’t be as warm as yesterday but most spots are expected to have a high temperature in the low-60s today. High temperatures will be in the low-50s later this week as an increasingly cold air mass takes hold of our local weather pattern. Overnight lows are slated to be below freezing Thursday night, Friday night, and potentially Saturday night as well.

MAINLY CLOUDY AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY… Skies will remain mostly cloudy on Wednesday with weather conditions quite similar to what we are expecting today. We start the day with overnight lows in the low-40s but temperatures will rise into the low-60s for afternoon highs on Wednesday.

QUITE COLD ON THURSDAY, FRIDAY, AND SATURDAY… Despite sunshine being in the forecast for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning, temperatures will be quite chilly each day later this week. Highs on Thursday and Friday will be in the low-50s. There is a real chance some communities across inland areas of southwest Alabama may not get out of the 40s for afternoon highs. Overnight lows will be in the mid- to upper-20s farther inland later this week. Multiple nights with freezing temperatures are ahead.

SUNDAY NEW YEAR’S EVE SUNDAY; RAIN POSSIBLE NEW YEAR’S DAY… Mostly sunny skies are expected for much of the day on New Year’s Eve on Sunday. Clouds will increase in coverage overnight into New Year’s Day on Monday when a few showers will become possible. For now, it looks like most of the New Year’s festivities across the region will be dry. Temperatures will be in the 40s most likely around midnight as we kick off 2024. We still are 5 days out from New Year’s thus forecast changes may be required. Please check back in later this week for further information on this.
