BECOMING SUNNY; NICE WEATHER FOR WEEKEND; UPDATE ON CARIBBEAN DISTURBANCE… After many days of tracking the system that would ultimately become Hurricane Helene, we finally have a quieter weather pattern in store across south Alabama, northwest Florida, and the Gulf Coast region today and into the weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with the many people in Florida and Georgia that sustained damage from Hurricane Helene overnight. Helene continues to weaken but the storm continues to cause a host of problems across Georgia, eastern Tennessee, and the Carolinas. The good news is there is no “hurricane behind Helene coming to our area,” despite rumors and viral social media posts.
MOSTLY SUNNY TODAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND LOCALLY… Plenty of sunshine is in the forecast today, tomorrow, and on Sunday. Skies may become partly cloudy on Sunday evening. High temperatures will be in the mid-80s today and tomorrow with upper-80s becoming likely by Sunday. Overnight lows will be in the mid-60s.
MORE SUNSHINE INTO NEXT WEEK… Dry, warm days are upcoming for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. High temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-80s with mostly sunny skies each day.
HIGH RISK OF FLASH FLOODING IN PARTS OF GEORGIA AND CAROLINAS TODAY… The remnant circulation associated with a weakening Hurricane Helene continues to produce extremely heavy rain in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas this morning. This has prompted an uncommon High Risk zone for the potential for flash flooding that extends into western North Carolina. If you have travel plans to Georgia, Florida, or the Carolinas today, be aware of the potential of encountering hurricane damage AND heavy rain at times.
TROPICAL STORM ISAAC IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC… Tropical Storm Isaac is located well away from land areas in the northern Atlantic Ocean. The system is moving to the northeast and will not directly affect land areas while it is a tropical storm. Isaac will never be a direct concern for Alabama or Florida.
90% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMATION IN ATLANTIC… A tropical wave located about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the west coast of Africa has a 90% chance of becoming a named tropical storm as the system moves northwest. The developing storm will remain away from land areas over the next 5-7 days.
CARIBBEAN DISTURBANCE MAY DEVELOP NEXT WEEK… The National Hurricane Center continues to indicate there is a 20-30% chance of a new tropical disturbance developing in the western Caribbean Sea around the middle part of the upcoming week. There is also a chance the system never develops at all. There is no consistent, reliable indication of any hurricane moving our way over the next week. That is not to say a hurricane won’t develop in a week or two. It IS hurricane season, after all, but to be clear, we simply have no evidence of that whatsoever right now. It is VERY early in this process and models are just beginning to latch on to the idea of a disturbance developing. This is simply something to watch over the next several days. Again, could this be something down the road that potentially affects Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas? Yes. But there is no skill in forecasting any specifics this far out.
