NICE THURSDAY; RAIN & STORMS SUNDAY… Mostly sunny and nice weather will continue across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Thursday. High temperatures will be in the low 80s today. Temperatures will dip into the 60s by 7PM this evening with overnight lows expected to be in the 40s by the time we get to 7AM Friday. Tomorrow is also expected to be a dry day with high temperatures in the mid 80s.

INCREASING CLOUD COVER; RAIN POSSIBLE LATE SATURDAY NIGHT… Most, if not all of the daytime hours of Saturday are expected to be dry. Cloud cover will build in from the west throughout the day. Scattered showers may become possible as early as Saturday night across parts of west Alabama. Scattered storms will become more numerous after sunrise on Sunday. For now, the overall risk of severe storms remains low, although we note that some models bring a warm front a bit further inland from the Gulf on Sunday, potentially paving the way for a few strong storms.

UNSETTLED PATTERN POSSIBLE INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK… The local forecast is a bit more uncertain as we get into Monday and Tuesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may be possible under some scenarios. It probably won’t be a situation where rain and storms happen all day on Monday or Tuesday, but we may have a few widely scattered storms at times.

TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM MELISSA EXPECTED TO BECOME POWERFUL HURRICANE… Tropical Storm Melissa, centered about 300 miles south-southwest of Port Au Prince, Haiti or about 325 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, continues to have maximum winds of near 50 mph. Melissa is nearly stationary this morning with movement toward the west-northwest at 1 mph (yes, only one mile per hour!). Melissa won’t be moving much at all over the next few days. The official forecast from the National Hurricane Center calls for a slow westerly movement later this weekend into early next week. Melissa is forecast to be a major hurricane by early next week. Interests in Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands should closely monitor the progress of Melissa over the next several days.

TROPICS: GULF REMAINS QUIET… The Gulf remains quiet with no new tropical storms expected to form over the next 5-7 days.
