MOSTLY CLOUDY TODAY AND INTO WEEKEND; RAIN SUNDAY AND MONDAY… Skies will remain mostly cloudy across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Friday with a few sprinkles and showers being possible, quite similar to the last few days. High temperatures will once again be in the low-80s. Our weather pattern will be consistent through the weekend with mostly cloudy skies on both Saturday and Sunday. Showers and a few thunderstorms will be possible on Sunday into Monday. Widespread severe weather, however, seems unlikely.
HURRICANE RAFAEL TO TURN SOUTH TOWARD MEXICO NEXT WEEK… Talk about a complete 180° from a few days ago! Hurricane Rafael, now a category 2 storm with max. winds near 105 mph, will continue moving west this weekend before moving south toward the Bay of Campeche next week. The National Hurricane Center projected path shows Rafael moving into the southwestern Gulf by Monday afternoon, likely as a tropical storm. Further weakening is expected next week and Rafael may be a tropical depression or remnant low pressure area before the system reaches the coast of Mexico. Hurricane Rafael is not expected to directly affect Alabama or northwest Florida, other than causing a higher risk of rip currents at local beaches.
TROPICAL WAVE NEAR PUERTO RICO… The National Hurricane Center indicates a tropical wave located just north of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico has a 20% chance of becoming a named tropical storm over the next few days while moving westward through the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. From NHC: “A trough of low pressure located near and north of the Virgin Islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some gradual development of this system is possible during the next couple of days while it moves westward near the Greater Antilles. Regardless of development, locally heavy rains are possible across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the southeastern Bahamas through Saturday.”
