MAINLY DRY & WARM START TO THE WEEK; COLD TEMPS RETURN LATER THIS WEEK… We have just about something for everyone in the forecast this week with high temperatures set to be in the mid to upper 70s today, tomorrow, and Wednesday ahead of sharply cooler temperatures set to arrive this weekend when highs will be in the 50s. While a few, small showers will be possible today over west Alabama, most communities will remain dry. Showers will be possible across the region Wednesday night into the very early morning hours of Thursday as a cold front moves through our region.
LOW-END RAIN CHANCES TODAY… Skies will be partly cloudy today with a very low-end (0-10%) chance of rain. Any showers that happen should remain confined to parts of west Alabama. There is a high chance that any showers that happen will be quite brief and localized in nature. MOST communities will remain completely dry today.
MILD DAYS, COOL NIGHTS THROUGH WEDNESDAY… Temperatures will remain above our climatological norms today, tomorrow, and on Wednesday with highs expected to be in the 70s. Overnight lows tomorrow morning will be in the low 50s.
COLD TEMPS COMING LATER THIS WEEK… A strong cold front will move through south Alabama and northwest Florida on Wednesday night, bringing colder air from the northern states into our region. Highs on Thursday and Friday will likely be in the low 60s ahead of highs in the 50s this weekend. Overnight lows will again be near the freezing mark by the time we get to Sunday morning.
WAY TOO EARLY LOOK AT CHRISTMAS FORECAST… Long-time viewers and readers know that I do not put much stock into “forecasts” beyond 7 days out. The skill in physical meteorology simply is not there for us to be able to know exact weather forecast more than 14 days out. We can, however, look at the overall pattern indications to give us some ideas for how the specific weather forecast may be on a day in that range. Again, take this with a big dose of skepticism until we get more data in to be able to back this up: Drier than average conditions are expected in 8-14 days. For now, there is not a clear signal for temperatures with equal chances of above and below normal values for Christmas Day. The average high for Christmas Day around south Alabama and northwest Florida is around 61° with the average low being 38°. We will get much more clear on the Christmas Day forecast in just a few days.
