FINALLY SOME GOOD TROPICAL NEWS… While the tropics remain very active this morning with Hurricane Florence prepping for a Carolina landfall late tonight or on Friday, there are a few good bits of news to pass along this morning. We’ve also got your local weather forecast for today. Let’s look at the headlines…

– Hurricane Florence is still strong, with maximum winds around 110 mph, however the system IS weaker than it was 12 hours ago. Potentially catastrophic impacts, unfortunately, are still expected along portions of the North Carolina and South Carolina coast in the form of 1-2 FEET of rainfall.

– I’m most encouraged that Tropical Storm Isaac is barely hanging on this morning to tropical storm status. The center of circulation was completely void of any convection around 1AM. The National Hurricane Center says there is a growing chance Isaac may degenerate into a remnant low pressure area over the next few days. Most global models support this solution. There are, however, some models that strengthen Isaac in 5-6 days when the system reaches the western Caribbean. We’ll keep you posted.

– More good news this morning is that NHC has lowered their probability of development for INVEST 95L, the tropical wave in the western Gulf of Mexico. There is now a 50-60% chance that a tropical depression may form before Saturday. That’s lower than the former 70% chance over the last two days. Model guidance brings the center of the system into Texas or Mexico over the next 72 hours as a weak tropical storm or tropical depression.

– Hurricane Helene is a large hurricane over the far eastern Atlantic. Helene will move north over the next 2 days before turning northeast and weakening. No threat to the USA or North America.

– Subtropical Storm Joyce will meander over the northeast part of the Atlantic Ocean before weakening and being absorbed by Hurricane Helene later this weekend. No threat to land.

– I expect another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms to happen this afternoon into the evening hours. Storms will produce loud thunder and lots of lightning in some cases, but severe weather is not expected. High temperatures today will be around 92°.

– Rain chances will decrease for the Alabama and northwest Florida weekend, with only a 20% and 10% chance of rain for Saturday and Sunday. Overall, we’re about to enter a hotter and drier pattern in the next week.

Have a nice Thursday!
