POP-UP P.M. STORMS TODAY & THIS WEEK; TROPICAL DISTURBANCE TO PASS TO OUR SOUTH… Showers and thunderstorms will likely pop up this afternoon into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Widespread severe weather is not expected today, but some of the storms will be “loud and proud” at times with cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, gusty winds, and small hail being possible in the strongest of the storms. Daily pop-up thunderstorms will be possible in the P.M. hours in each of the next 7 days. High temperatures will be in the low-90s across the region today. We continue to monitor what was Hurricane Agatha, currently inland over southern Mexico. This system may emerge into the southern Gulf or western Caribbean Sea and become our first named tropical storm of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season. A few more Tuesday morning forecast notes are below.

AFTERNOON & EVENING STORMS EACH DAY THIS WEEK… Pulse-type, pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible in each of the next 7-10 days. Most of the storms each day will happen in the afternoon and evening hours. While there likely will not be a defined severe weather risk this week, keep in mind that some of these pop-up storms may “pack a punch” at times with torrential downpours of rain in localized areas, cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, and even small hail in the strongest of the storms. I will have radar updates posted as needed in the RedZone Weather app.

REMNANTS OF AGATHA MAY DEVELOP IN SOUTHERN GULF… The National Hurricane Center continues to suggest on this Tuesday that our first tropical storm of the 2022 hurricane season may form in the southern Gulf of Mexico or the western Caribbean Sea later this week. This system will be driven by the remnants of what was Hurricane Agatha over in the Eastern Pacific basin. Right now, I see no evidence to suggest any potential impacts from this potential tropical storm happening in south Alabama or northwest Florida. Obviously we’ll be diligently watching for any model changes, but I suspect the steering pattern in place will push this system eastward toward the Florida Peninsula (not the Panhandle where we are) in the days ahead.

REMNANTS OF HURRICANE AGATHA MAY DEVELOP INTO NEW TROPICAL STORM LATER THIS WEEK… The National Hurricane Center says there is now a 50% chance of the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season forming in the southern Gulf or western Caribbean Sea in the days ahead. Hurricane Agatha made landfall near Puerto Angel, Mexico in the last few hours with max. winds in excess of 100 mph. The storm is expected to rapidly weaken in the hours ahead before moving northeast toward the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. A new, separate low-level circulation center may develop somewhere in the southern Gulf of Mexico or the western Caribbean Sea associated with this system in the days ahead. That is when the system will become a tropical depression or tropical storm. The key headline for south Alabama and northwest Florida remains: Regardless if this system becomes a tropical storm in the Gulf, NO local impacts are expected at this time. To repeat, we are forecasting no local impacts from what could become Tropical Storm Alex in the days ahead. The system will remain to our south and east. Impacts WILL be possible in the Florida Peninsula (not the Panhandle where we are but rather the Florida Peninsula in areas south of Jacksonville and Ocala).

50% CHANCE OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTHERN GULF OR WESTERN CARIBBEAN… Here is the 8PM EDT Monday discussion from the National Hurricane Center: “A large and complex area of low pressure is expected to develop near the Yucatan Peninsula and the northwestern Caribbean Sea in a couple of days, partially related to the remnants of Hurricane Agatha from the eastern Pacific. Thereafter, this system is forecast to move slowly northeastward, and a tropical depression could form in the northwestern Caribbean or southeastern Gulf of Mexico by the latter part of this week. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is likely across portions of southern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, and western Cuba through the week.”

LOCALLY, POP-UP STORMS THIS WEEK… We have entered into a fairly predictable weather pattern this week with a chance of showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. These pulse-type, pop-up storms will be capable of producing localized areas of heavy rain, gusty winds, and cloud-to-ground lightning. Most of these storms develop in the afternoon and evening hours. Usually, these storms are below severe limits but occasionally, you can get a few storms that ramp up and produce severe winds (58+ mph) and large hail. High temperatures this week will consistently be around 90 degrees with morning lows in the upper-60s. Just know, outside of any hurricane or tropical activity (currently none in the local forecast), it is fairly difficult to get a pattern change in the summertime around here. This will probably be a rather consistent forecast for at least the next several weeks. We probably will have some days in the weeks ahead where temperatures rise to near the triple digit range as we approach the middle of summer.

MOSTLY SUNNY TODAY; FEW SHOWERS POSSIBLE… Mostly sunny skies are ahead today and over the next few days in the morning hours. Clouds will increase in the afternoon hours today ahead of a low-end (10-20%) chance of a few showers and thunderstorms bubbling up in the heat of the day. Widespread, significant severe storms are not expected today or over the next several days. High temperatures today will be in the upper-80s and near 90 areawide. A few more Memorial Day forecast notes are below.

SCATTERED STORMS LIKELY IN THE AFTERNOONS AHEAD… This week will feature a seasonal summertime pattern across the region with a chance of showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. High temperature will be around 90 with morning lows in the upper-60s.

AGATHA IN THE PACIFIC; LOW-END CHANCE OF REDEVELOPMENT IN ATLANTIC BASIN… Hurricane Agatha is a powerful storm packing maximum winds well in excess of 100 mph today. Agatha is expected to make landfall along the southern, Pacific coast of Mexico this evening or tonight. The system will likely weaken to the point of being a remnant low pressure area by tomorrow night. The National Hurricane Center has defined an area in the southern Gulf of Mexico and Bay of Campeche OR the western Caribbean Sea near the Yucatan Peninsula where the remnants of Agatha may redevelop into a tropical storm. Early model indications point to the remnants of Agatha never being a direct concern for Alabama or northwest Florida.
