POP-UP P.M. STORMS TODAY & THIS WEEK; TROPICAL DISTURBANCE TO PASS TO OUR SOUTH… Showers and thunderstorms will likely pop up this afternoon into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Widespread severe weather is not expected today, but some of the storms will be “loud and proud” at times with cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, gusty winds, and small hail being possible in the strongest of the storms. Daily pop-up thunderstorms will be possible in the P.M. hours in each of the next 7 days. High temperatures will be in the low-90s across the region today. We continue to monitor what was Hurricane Agatha, currently inland over southern Mexico. This system may emerge into the southern Gulf or western Caribbean Sea and become our first named tropical storm of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season. A few more Tuesday morning forecast notes are below.
AFTERNOON & EVENING STORMS EACH DAY THIS WEEK… Pulse-type, pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible in each of the next 7-10 days. Most of the storms each day will happen in the afternoon and evening hours. While there likely will not be a defined severe weather risk this week, keep in mind that some of these pop-up storms may “pack a punch” at times with torrential downpours of rain in localized areas, cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, and even small hail in the strongest of the storms. REMNANTS OF AGATHA MAY DEVELOP IN SOUTHERN GULF… The National Hurricane Center continues to suggest on this Tuesday that our first tropical storm of the 2022 hurricane season may form in the southern Gulf of Mexico or the western Caribbean Sea later this week. This system will be driven by the remnants of what was Hurricane Agatha over in the Eastern Pacific basin. Right now, I see no evidence to suggest any potential impacts from this potential tropical storm happening in south Alabama or northwest Florida. Obviously we’ll be diligently watching for any model changes, but I suspect the steering pattern in place will push this system eastward toward the Florida Peninsula (not the Panhandle where we are) in the days ahead.
