MAINLY DRY; FEW P.M. STORMS IN DAYS AHEAD… P.M. pop-up thunderstorms will return to our forecast in the days ahead. Today and tomorrow, rain and storms will be widely spaced in nature. Highs will surge into the mid 90s on Friday and Saturday.

MAINLY DRY TODAY AND INTO WEEKEND; A FEW, WIDELY SCATTERED P.M. STORMS POSSIBLE… Nearly all of us across south Alabama and northwest Florida will remain dry on this Thursday. A few, highly isolated showers and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out as we get into the early evening hours. Any storms that develop locally today should be brief. High temperatures will be in the low 90s today. Looking ahead into the weekend, hotter temperatures are expected in the afternoon hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. High temperatures will be in the mid 90s each day. Fortunately, we have no imminent Gulf concerns in the tropics as we approach the peak of hurricane season.

WEEKEND FORECAST: A FEW P.M. STORMS, MOSTLY SUNNY, AND HOT… If you have outdoor plans this weekend, you should be in good shape for the most part. There is an off chance (10% chance or so) of a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms developing in the P.M. hours each day. Most locales should remain completely dry. Hot temperatures are expected in the afternoon and early evening hours. Most spots across south Alabama and northwest Florida will peak in the mid 90s each day with heat index values closer to 100°.

TROPICS: 80% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM DEVELOPING IN ATLANTIC… The National Hurricane Center has odds of development of a tropical storm in the central Atlantic Ocean at an 80% chance this morning. This system is not a direct concern for Alabama or northwest Florida right now and won’t be over the next 7 days. As always, however, it’s important to watch any systems that develop in the Atlantic that ultimately could move into the Gulf. This system, however, appears likely to recurve into the Atlantic, most likely. If that changes in the days ahead, I’ll let you know. From NHC: “A tropical wave located over the eastern tropical Atlantic a few hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions remain conducive for additional development of this system during the next several days, and a tropical depression is likely to form late this week or this weekend. This system is expected to move westward to west-northwestward at around 15 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic into early next week.”

TROPICS: CARIBBEAN & GULF REMAIN QUIET… The Gulf and Caribbean Sea remain quiet with no new tropical storms expected to form over the next 5-7 days. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens on September 11. That doesn’t mean the Gulf will become active around the peak, necessarily, but it does mean we have to watch any systems that have any potential of developing carefully. For now, the Gulf continues to be in good shape.

TROPICS: KIKO & LORENA IN EASTERN PACIFIC… Hurricane Kiko is a major hurricane well away from any land areas in the Pacific Ocean on this Thursday. Kiko is expected to weaken in the days ahead but the system may approach Hawaii next week, perhaps as a tropical storm or even a hurricane. In addition to Kiko, we’re also watching Hurricane Lorena closer to Mexico. Lorena is expected to make landfall in the Baja Peninsula of Mexico later today or tonight. Neither Kiko nor Lorena will ever be direct concerns for Alabama or northwest Florida.

See all the details in your Thursday morning RedZone Weather forecast video. My next forecast video will be posted by 7:15AM tomorrow morning. I will have updates posted throughout the day, as needed, in the RedZone Weather app.

Have a good Thursday!

HIGHLY ISOLATED STORMS POSSIBLE THIS EVENING… I can’t completely rule out one or two isolated storms later today. Most spots across south Alabama and northwest Florida will remain dry. High temperatures will be in the low 90s region wide.

Have a nice Thursday!
