RAIN & SCATTERED STORMS TODAY; COOLER TOMORROW; WARMER NEXT WEEK… Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout the day at times on this Thursday. Rain amounts will generally be less than a half inch of rain in total across the region. We likely will have multiple waves of rain and storms throughout the day. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the 60s. We dry out tomorrow with a brief cold snap in place ahead of increasingly warmer temperatures as we get into the early part of Christmas Week.

VERY LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK AT THE COAST… The overall risk of any severe thunderstorms happening across south Alabama and northwest Florida remains quite low today. IF (and that’s a big IF) we have any severe storms, development would almost certainly happen near the Alabama and northwest Florida coast where a brief overlap of instability and shear may exist this afternoon into this evening. Again, to be clear, the vast majority of us across the region will simply have rain and thunder at times today with no severe weather issues. Any thunderstorms that become strong or marginally severe near the coast will be capable of producing gusty winds and perhaps a brief waterspout or two. The overall risk of tornadoes today remains quite low. I will have radar updates posted throughout the day as needed in the RedZone Weather app.

SCATTERED STORMS SHIFT TO THE EAST TONIGHT… Intermittent rain and thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day and into tonight. One final band of showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms will move across the region this evening into the overnight hours. This final band of storms is expected to remain quite tame and far below severe limits. Rain will clear out to the east by early Friday morning.

DRIER AND COOLER DAY TOMORROW; COLD FRIDAY NIGHT… Clouds will shift to the east of our local area in the morning hours, paving the way for a mostly sunny afternoon. High temperatures tomorrow will be in the upper 50s and low 60s. Ovenright lows will be in the 30s in many communities Friday night into Saturday morning. I suspect most locales will remain above the freezing mark, but I can’t completely rule out a few cities and towns north of U.S. Highway 84 dropping to the freezing mark by 6AM Saturday.

WARMER TEMPS SUNDAY INTO NEXT WEEK… If you have not been enjoying the cold weather we have had through much of December so far, the second half of the month looks increasingly mild. High temperatures on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Christmas Eve Wednesday will be in the low 70s. Overnight lows will be in the 50s early next week.

CHRISTMAS DAY FORECAST… Mostly sunny skies seem likely for Christmas Day on Thursday of the upcoming week. I realize a lot of people want cold conditions on Christmas Day, but that simply is not in the cards for south Alabama or northwest Florida this year. High temperatures will likely range from the upper 60s inland to mid 70s near the coast. This will be a phenomenal Christmas for all the folks who are traveling as dry and mild conditions are likely.
